There is no honor in college coaching
Tuesday, December 18, 2007
By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

If there's any justice in the college football world, Jeannette star quarterback Terrelle Pryor will pick Ohio State and torture Michigan for the next three or four years in the greatest rivalry in sports.

Michigan deserves as much. It swooped in to steal coach Rich Rodriguez over the weekend even though university officials knew he was signed through the 2013 season at West Virginia. Rodriguez certainly deserves as much. He's from West Virginia and is a West Virginia graduate. He stuck the knife in the backs of his own. Heaven help him sleep at night.

The sleaziness just gets worse and worse in college athletics.

Last week, Bobby Petrino quit on the Atlanta Falcons with three games left in the NFL season to take the job at Arkansas despite being in the first year of a five-year contract. I believe he's still in Fayetteville, but, with this guy, who knows? In the past 17 months, Petrino signed 20 years' worth of contracts, bailing out on a 10-year deal with Louisville before leaving the Falcons to sign his five-year deal with Arkansas. That's beyond reprehensible.

Sadly, we've seen this sort of thing here before. Michigan hired West Virginia basketball coach John Beilein after last season despite Beilein's contract at West Virginia through the 2011-12 season. (Who could have guessed Michigan would have to turn to its West Virginia farm system to find its coaches? Rodriguez wasn't its first choice; it was spurned by Louisiana State's Les Miles and Rutgers' Greg Schiano). At Pitt, basketball coach Ben Howland left for UCLA after the '02-03 season despite signing a seven-year extension the year before. Current coach Jamie Dixon held Pitt hostage after the '05-06 season by using interest from Arizona State to get a big raise despite having four years left on his original deal.

But, somehow, the Rodriguez case seems worse, enough to make you want to take a long shower to scrub away the attendant filth. It's not just his ties to West Virginia. It's the way the university stepped up big time just a year ago to keep him after he was all but out the door to go to Alabama, giving him a huge raise, pay increases for his assistant coaches and a promise to upgrade facilities.

You might remember that whole sad episode. Late in the '06 season, Rodriguez went on statewide radio in West Virginia to express outrage that his name was linked to the Alabama job. "I plan on being the coach at West Virginia the rest of my career, if they'll have me," he fairly screamed at the time. Less than a week later, he was prepared to accept Alabama's offer only to stay at West Virginia after university officials and boosters sweetened his contract. "You'll see I'm committed to West Virginia for a long, long time," Rodriguez said after his new deal was announced.

It turns out a long time was one more disappointing, underachieving season, a regular season that ended with the Mountaineers choking -- as they so often did in big games under Rodriguez -- and missing out on a chance to play in the Jan. 7 national championship game by losing to 281/2-point underdog Pitt at home in their final game.

That's twice Rodriguez has proved to be a flat-out liar, which should tell everyone -- especially recruits and their parents -- that they shouldn't believe a word he says.

Are you paying attention, Terrelle?

Heck, even signing with Penn State and playing for quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno makes more sense -- as crazy as that sounds -- than playing for Rodriguez at Michigan. At least there's honor at Penn State with Joe Paterno.

But maybe they don't have too much of a right to complain at West Virginia. Wasn't it only a few days after Beilein left that West Virginia officials turned to Bob Huggins as their new basketball coach? After Huggins had coached just one year of a six-year contract at Kansas State?

Don't be surprised if West Virginia does the same kind of thing to replace Rodriguez.

Hey, if it's detestable when they steal one of yours, it's just as a detestable when you steal somebody else's.

The coaches are never going to stop this nonsense. Why should they? They keep making more and more money with contracts that aren't worth the paper they're written on to the schools. The only way it's going to stop is if the university presidents get together and make a pact to not steal another school's coach as long as he's under contract.

We can dream, can't we?

It's probably just as well that Bo Schembechler isn't alive to see what's happening in college sports in general and with his beloved Michigan program in particular.

The sight would sicken him.

Schembechler was a giant in coaching, a man who won with class and integrity, one who helped make the Michigan program one of the most respected in America.

Now Michigan has turned to Rodriguez?

Ol' Bo must be rolling in his grave.

Rich Rod is an arrogant jerk and will be run out of Michigan in a few years after his team under perform just like they did at WV.

Interestingly enough, Coach Rod has been on the receiving end of this kind of thing too. When Tommy Bowden left Tulane, Rod thought he had the job. Then the #1 booster's brother suddenly got introduced as the new coach.

The result was 8 straight years of .500 or worse conference records. Katrina got the idiot coach a mulligan.

First off, I hate these arrogant HS kids controlling the show. Eff Pryor. OSU won a national championship with Craig Krenzel under Jim Tressel and he's about to win another one with Todd Boeckman. He lost badly with a Pryor -type QB. The best QB's in the NFL are still pure drop back passers.

As far as Rich leaving, it's probably better to hate the game, not the player.

Butch Davis.......Jimmie Johnson.......Bobby Petrino.......Dennis Erickson

All college coaches who were hired while under contract with a college team. The ax swings both ways. Money talks and bullshit walks. Pick your favorite saying here and run with it because these guys are always looking the BBT.

Offer more money and a better job to anyone and see how deep their loyalty really is. I'm willing to bet money that the vast majority of people would leave in a heartbeat for a better job with more money.
