Default Steelers have options if Rossum sidelined

Steelers have options if Rossum sidelined
By Mike Prisuta
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, January 4, 2008

The Steelers haven't had many happy returns this season, but they have options available in the event Allen Rossum (hamstring) is unable to return kickoffs and punts Saturday night against Jacksonville in an AFC playoff game.
"We've got a couple candidates there, really," coach Mike Tomlin said. "(WR) Willie (Reid) has been involved, (RB) Najeh (Davenport) has been involved, and (WR) Cedrick Wilson's been involved. Santonio (Holmes) caught punts this week. We'll leave no stone unturned to make sure we have a quality man back there ready to play."

Rossum missed last Sunday's regular-season finale in Baltimore. He was replaced on kickoff returns by Reid and on punt returns by Wilson.

Tomlin said he'll have no reservations about using starters to return kickoffs and punts if it comes to that. "It's time to leave it all out there, bro," Tomlin said. "We're not going to save any nuts. We're not going to squirrel them. We're going to be ready to play. No job too small this week."

No practice on Thursday
Strong safety Troy Polamalu (knee), Rossum (hamstring) and Offensive tackle Marvel Smith (back) didn't practice for the Steelers on Thursday. Reid (shoulder) participated on a limited basis. Running back LaBrandon Toefield (ankle) didn't practice for Jacksonville.

Digits

• 4 teams in the playoffs this season that have yet to win an NFL championship (Jacksonville, San Diego, Seattle, Tennessee).

• 152 NFL-record postseason punt return yards for Rossum while playing for Atlanta against St. Louis in a 2004 NFC Divisional Game.

Please leave Willie Reid's stone turned.

Out of those 4, I'd probably go with Wilson. The Jags are physical all the way around and I don't want to chance Dookie or Santo getting injured on a P/K return. Plus - I don't know that Santo's ankle is 100% - why take the risk?

Agreed. In fact, lets place a few more stones on top of his stone, so they can't dig him up.

Lets just call an all out block on punts and let the ball come to rest.

Always wonder why Najeh is considered a good return man ?? To me he's just too big and not enough speed. Always seems to get to around the 30 or so.
I guess because he holds onto the ball, and maybe our standards have dropped the past few years, but man we need an explosive player back there.
If I am the Jags I would kick it to Najeh all day knowing the chance for an explosive return is pretty minimal.

Ya but he's in the NFL now, and maybe he has added bulk because he is definately not quick. At leasy by retunr man standards.
Name me another team that put someone his size back as the main return man on kick offs. Most teams have an exposive return guy, which is often a DB who has plenty of jets....

Outside of Devin Hester, In can't think of any team in the NFL that has a really dynamic guy back there bringing back kicks these days.

Besides, most return guys are only as good as the dudes blocking for them and our blockers haven't been all that great this season.

With all of our injuries, what about Bryant McFadden, if he isn't injured too.
