Default Giants Co-Owner Dies

+-------- NY Giants Co-Owner Wellington Mara Dies -------+

RYE, N.Y. - Wellington Mara, the co-owner of the New York
Giants of the National Football League, died at his Rye,
N.Y., home of lymphatic cancer at the age of 89.

Mara's father, Tim, who died in 1959, was a charter member
of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wellington Mara, the
Giants' president and co-chief executive officer, was
elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997, making the Maras the
first father and son inducted in the hall.

Mara sat on the Giants' bench at the Polo Grounds as a
9-year-old ball boy on Oct. 18, 1925, when they played
their first home game.

In much of the 1970's, Mara served as chairman of the
executive committee of the NFL Management Council, the
owners group that negotiated with the players union, The
New York Times said.

This is actually sad news for the NFL. Mara was the kind of owner every team should have. His teams weren't always championship caliber but he stuck with the team, poor investment or not based solely on a childhood home-town loyalty. COMPLETELY missing from sports management and players these days.

these homegrown franchises are definitely a dying breed. pretty soon all sports teams will be corporate, with owners such as arthur blank, dan snyder, mark cuban etc. where owning a team is merely a hobby or investment instead of a way of life for a whole family.

amazing that w. mara's father bought the rights to have the giants in 1925 for $500. now it is a billion dollar franchise. trully the americain dream.

It's sad to think that the days of the family owned franchises are in the twilight of their era.
