Default Report: MNF drops Kolber, Tafoya

Report: MNF drops Kolber, Tafoya
Posted: February 10, 2008
Sporting News staff report

Sideline reporters Michele Tafoya and Suzy Kolber are being dropped from the Monday Night Football broadcast, multiple sources have told ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio.

It is not known whether ESPN plans to go without sideline reporters on Monday Night Football -- a la CBS on most NFL telecasts -- or replace Tafoya and Kolber with a big-name reporter.

After being mum on the issue for much of Sunday, the network sent Florio the following statement: "Michele and Suzy will still be assigned to our multiplatform Monday Night Football presentation, including the game, pregame and postgame. Their precise roles are currently being determined."

Florio, a regular contributor to Sporting News, says his sources stand by the story that Tafoya and Kolber no longer will be sideline reporters on the Monday Night Football broadcast. One source called ESPN's statement damage control.

Tafoya and Kolber had reported news and features from the two sidelines since Monday Night Football moved from ABC to ESPN in 2006. Kolber has been a sideline reporter on ESPN's NFL games since 2001. Tafoya started working MNF games as a sideline reporter in 2004.

Tafoya also is a sideline reporter for ABC and ESPN on NBA games and is the co-host of the "Mike Tirico Show" on ESPN Radio. Kolber also is an anchor on ESPN's daily NFL Live show and occasionally anchors SportsCenter and ESPN coverage of the Wimbledon and the French Open tennis tournaments.

Tafoya sucked but Suzy Kolber is as knowledgable as any sportcaster on ESPN.

I think ESPN wanted to protect Kolber and Tafoya from being eaten by John Madden. Word has it he was seen sneaking around the ESPN studios.

This thread begs to have this posted - my favorite Suzy Kolber moment - "I couldn't care less if the team is strugg-a-ling - I just wanna kiss you."

They need to drop Kornheiser from Monday Night Football....How is that guy even into sports? He'd be better suited to a worldwide chess match commentator.

Yep; all they need to do now is drop Kornheiser, Tirico, and Jaworski, and get rid of the inane celebrity drop-ins, and the telecast will be perfect.

Cameras no longer allowed in the booth....and Jack Lambert should be hired to just sit in the booth with the commentators...stare...and growl with that toothless glare, everytime they get off topic.

...and Suzy Kolber should be hired to come to my house...so I could also.....stare....and growl....but in a good way.

Unless the NFL offers real access, sideline reporters are pretty much useless. What does FOX get out of Tony Siragusa - other than comic relief, I mean?

ESPN won't drop Kornheiser because they see his MNF gig as a way to boost ratings for PTI. The NFL is a "loss leader" for networks (ESPN pays the most)... They lose money on their billion dollar investments, but use it to boost their other programming like PTI. CBS, NBC and FOX do same thing. "Oh look ... there is that actor with a new show starting on the network this week at the game." What an amazing 'quinkidink" that he happened to show up at the game.

Between Kornheiser's MNF booth gig and Wilbon's work on the NBA coverage they surely get some buzz for one of ESPN's signature shows.

Very high expense reports for meals, maybe? Dude probably eats more in one sitting than I do in a week.
