Default NEAL and BRUCE cut

this was very interesting to find out
also the cowboys resigned adams
Rams release veterans Bruce, Frerotte
Associated Press

ST. LOUIS -- For the second time in three years, the St. Louis Rams released wide receiver Isaac Bruce. This time they may be cutting ties for good with the last player remaining from the team's 1995 move from Los Angeles to St. Louis.

"It's a tough choice for the franchise," coach Scott Linehan said on the team's Web site, stlouisrams.com. "It's like anything else. We make decisions as a franchise on the business side and that's the part that makes it the most difficult."

Bruce's agent, Jimmy Sexton, didn't immediately return a telephone message from the AP.

Gus Frerotte, the backup quarterback the last two seasons, also was released on Thursday. The moves came hours before the start of free agency.

The 35-year-old Bruce had been due a $2 million roster bonus on Friday and the Rams were unsuccessful in attempts to restructure his contract. He signed a $15 million, three-year deal in March 2006, billed as an opportunity to finish his career with the Rams, five days after he was cut in a similar salary cap move.

TD/INT: 7/12Bruce is third on the NFL career list with 14,070 yards receiving, trailing only Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. He's sixth in receptions with 942, has been to four Pro Bowls and caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Kurt Warner in the Rams' Super Bowl victory over the Tennessee Titans in 2000.

Bruce was second on the team last season with 55 catches and had a 13.3 yards-per-catch average and four touchdowns. He has eight 1,000-yard seasons with the team and had 119 receptions for 1,781 yards and 13 touchdowns in 1995.

The 36-year-old Frerotte, also a 14-year veteran, made three starts when starter Marc Bulger was sidelined by injury and played in nine games overall in two seasons. Last year, he threw seven touchdown passes with 12 interceptions.

The move frees up $1.9 million heading into free agency while leaving the Rams with only two quarterbacks, Bulger and Brock Berlin, on the roster. Frerotte had been due a $500,000 roster bonus on Friday.

The Rams may be interested in free agent Todd Collins, who played for the Redskins last year when new offensive coordinator Al Saunders was with that team.

On Wednesday, the Rams restructured defensive end Leonard Little's contract to free up more cap space. The team's best pass rusher was hampered by a torn ligament in his left big toe, an injury that limited him to one sack, and ended the year on injured reserve after surgery.

SAN DIEGO -- All-Pro fullback Lorenzo Neal was released Thursday by the San Diego Chargers, who also parted with safety Marlon McCree and right tackle Shane Olivea in the hours before free agency opened.

General manager A.J. Smith said all three requested their release so they can quickly jump into free agency.

Olivea had four years left on his contract while McCree and Neal each had three years remaining.

Karen Vibert-Kennedy / US PRESSWIRE
37-year-old Lorenzo Neal spent the last five seasons with the Chargers.

Olivea lost his starting job to Jeromy Clary midway through the season. McCree was released in part to allow safety Eric Weddle to move into the starting lineup. Neal's role was expected to decrease in 2008. Neal also was a Pro Bowler.

McCree is probably best remembered for fumbling a fourth-down interception in the fourth quarter that gave the New England Patriots new life in a playoff win over the top-seeded Chargers after the 2006 season.

Still, there could be a demand for his services.

Smith also said kicker Dave Rayner, a restricted free agent, will not be tendered a contract. He was signed as a kickoff specialist after Nate Kaeding fractured his plant leg in a win over Denver on Dec. 24. Kaeding continued to kick field goals and PATs.

The Chargers expect unrestricted free agents Michael Turner and Drayton Florence to get big money elsewhere.

Turner is expected to get a starting job elsewhere after backing up LaDainian Tomlinson for three seasons. Smith shopped Turner last offseason but didn't get an offer he liked. So he kept the bruising back under a $2.35 million, one-year contract.

The Chargers tried for three years to work out an extension with Florence, who went from starter to nickel back after the emergence of Antonio Cromartie. Cromartie led the NFL with 10 interceptions and was named All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl.

The Chargers said 11 players have either had surgery or are scheduled to.

The three players scheduled to have surgery in the next few weeks were all chosen for the Pro Bowl. They are linebacker Shawne Merriman (knee), left tackle Marcus McNeill (shoulder) and defensive tackle Jamal Williams (knees). Williams pulled out of the Pro Bowl because of his injuries and McNeill, originally a second alternate, was added to the roster when two players pulled out.

Smith declined to be specific about the nature of their injuries.

Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates had surgery this week on his dislocated left big toe and is expected to have a rehab of four to six months.

FB Lorenzo Neal would be an Awesome sign for the Steelers at FB. Just think that maybe Davis isnt the blocker that Kreider or Neal is... not even close

Didn't Bruce already sign with the Niners. I think he did, and re-united with his old O Coordinator.

Neal...that's worth a look, small look.

Bruce is with the Niners on a two year deal.

NEAL should be looked at extensively. A blocker like that doesn't become available at FB every year, very rarely. I have a feeling the Steelers are too content with Davis though to even consider him.

Only if Dan Kreider would retire would this make it a solid signing. Kreider has been our best FB for many years now i just don't wanna see Davis blocking anymore

I also think that we could upgrade at FB...but would be more inclined to bring in a new "Jerome".... Jerome Felton 6'0 247lbs ...benched 225 30 times at the combine....scored 51 times in college.

Not so sure if I want a 37 year old fullback even if Lorenzo Neal has had a great career.

Felton may not get drafted since FB's are going the way of the 8-track...and he is a HOSS....(and a cheap UDFA Hoss at that)

Felton, thanks for the heads up, I'll research him a little and see what he's like. Thanks again.

Here is a great interview with him.

Jerome Felton Interview
By: Alex Khvatov

Alex Khvatov: What is current height, weight and forty time?
Jerome Felton: I am 6'0", 245 and I ran a 4.65 in the spring.

Alex Khvatov: You have received many accolades during your career, which one means the most to you?
Jerome Felton: Just being nominated for the Walter Payton Award last year. My main position is fullback. Not many fullbacks have been nominated for that award. It was really an honor to be mentioned with some of the best players in the nation.

Alex Khvatov: What are your strengths on the football field?
Jerome Felton: I am really versatile. I can go to a team and be a power runner. I have worked on my blocking skills during this off-season. I can catch, run and block. I wanted to make myself a more complete player. I am a definitely versatile.

Alex Khvatov: What are your weaknesses?
Jerome Felton: If you would have asked me last season, I would say my blocking. But I have worked on it and have become a dominant blocker. I just have to work a little bit on my technique, footwork and balance.

Alex Khvatov: What is your favorite NFL team?
Jerome Felton: The Pittsburgh Steelers. I like their offense. They always had a big back.

Alex Khvatov: Who is your favorite player?
Jerome Felton: Jerome Bettis. I wanted to play like him. Both of our names are Jerome. Our running styles are pretty similar. If I could compare myself to anybody, it would be him. He always had big games on Monday night football. I liked the way he ran with the football and punished defenders.

Alex Khvatov: What separates you from all of the other players at your position?
Jerome Felton: I just think that I have worked hard. I am a smart and coachable player. I would run through a brick wall if a coach asked me to do it. I am also a student of the game. I want to be a great runner, blocker and receiver. I am good at all of them. This season I have proven that I can be a dominant blocker. I am a complete player. I think that the best football is still ahead of me.

Alex Khvatov: How important is education to you?
Jerome Felton: It is very important. My mother stressed it. She was on me about academics. You can only be a football player for so long. After football, you have to move on, and education is the key for the rest of your life. I realize that. Ten years down the road, I will be alright. After my career is over, I will get into some business things. Maybe stick around and become a broadcaster.

Alex Khvatov: Has the NFL always been in the back of your mind?
Jerome Felton: To be honest with you since eight grade. I wrote my friends a note and passed it around in class asking them if they thought that I could make it. I told people that I was going to go to the NFL. Sophomore year at Furman, people started comparing me to other good players. It started to be more of a reality then.

Mike Tomlin said he wanted the team to "get younger." Signing Lorenzo Neal is not "getting younger."

Someone please let me know if this link is working...this is the Fullback out of Furman that I am pretty high on. He would not only be a Fullback but also a short yardage back.
