i think this was a form of the LBTE vs NLTBE bonuses that teams can use as a loophole to circumvent the salary cap. its not really a loophole but more of a way to apply some of this years pay to the unused portion of last years cap.

the patriots are masters at this. i was reading on their board how Eckel (?) earned 4 million or something like that. (it does something like erase his cap hit from this upcoming season).
