Default Linbackers Need To Step It Up

As was noted in the Post-Gazete today, the leading tacklers on Monday were Troy, Hope & Taylor, which is not a good sign - I have been disappointed in the OL most of the season but after watching 7 games the defensive play is noticeably worse than last year, with the LBs appearing to be the cause. Max protect is a nice excuse for no pass rush, but Porter in particular was consistently locked up by Jonathan Ogden

Farrior, while still a force, is not repeating his MVP season of last year and Porter gives every sign of having entered the Jason Giildon zone of quickly dropping from perennial Pro Bowler to upcoming salary cap casualty. Hopefully Foote & Farrior will step it up & figure out how to cover pass routes across across the middle, but with Haggans back I would like to see more Harrison & Haggans on the field together while the coaches figure out what to do with Porter.

I agree get Harrison and Haggans on the field together. Harrison makes some mistakes but he brings much needed attitude to the linebackers. I do think Foote played a good game against the ratbirds though.

The game has progressed...a ton of teams are employing strategies to filter plays back to their safeties to make tackles...If you look at the stats, what USED to be a sign of weakness against the run (DB tackle stats) is now rapidly turning out to be the opposite.

James Farrior is also ranked 7th in total tackles after only 7 games (While some teams have played 8 games).

DB's are now required to be physical specimens and know how to tackle. Gone are the days of the Deion Sanders players who just cover WR's.

the 34 defense is designed to have the 3 down lineman fill the gaps and take up double teams to free up the LBs and DBs to make most of the plays. as long as we are making the play, thats what really matters.

Overall the LB's are making alot of plays for us like usual, but the DB's are making alot more plays....that can also be attributed to Troy hanging closer to the Line as well.

It's not just the 3-4, and not just Pittsburgh. As size of players increases, the responsibilities increase. Jack Lambert would be an averaged sized strong safety today.

Absolutely, he even mentioned something similar to what you said in an interview a couple years back saying.. I may not be able to play toe to toe w/ the LB's these days because they are so big and fast, but he said my attitude would carry me more than enough against them !

Teams are copying the Jags when they went to a max protect blocking scheme. Our linebackers are being held up so the QB can make his throws down field. That is why we have our secondary leading us in tackles.
