Default Mock my Mock

Smidrow's picks:

23- Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
A big play threat with exceptional speed for his size. Will be a great compliment to Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward. The Steelers just cut Cedric Wilson so this addition will be an instant upgrade.

51- Justin King, CB, Penn State (traded up two spots w/ Washington giving up a six round pick in 2009)
May be the best overall corner in the draft. Has the skills to play in multiple defensive schemes and can tackle. Should be the starter by year two!

88- Bruce Davis, OLB, UCLA
Should solidify the OLB position for years to come playing opposite Woodley. Has had tremendous college production in his junior and senior seasons. Can get to the Qb and has the overall skill set to play in coverage.

119- Kirk Barton, OT, Ohio State
Should be a solid contributor that should be able to play both tackle and guard for the Steelers. He has great fundamentals, work ethic, and a mean streak making him a perfect fit for the Steeler style of football.

151- Carlton Powell, DE, Virginia Tech
When the Steelers passed on DeMario Pressley in order to take Barton it caused a ripple effect to allow the guy they wanted all along to be there at this pick. Played well in the 3-4 system and his best ball is ahead of him.

182- Barry Richardson, OT, Clemson
Developmental Tackle who has a solid skill set but has not been as dominant at the college level as he could of been.

Sweed would be sweet to have! if, and only if he's the best player available at pick 23

I haven't seen much of the receivers coming out of college, but I like what I've seen in sweed. he could be a nice replacement for hines in the future

Sweed may be even better that you think when he is a 100%

I have seen at lest to sites the have us taking King with our own 2rd round pick for what ever thats worth.

I have not watched a UCLA game all year, but have read that Davis plays a little soft. Have seen this at all?

Powell is a very interesting player to me, and I've read that the Steeler have shown interest in him.

I just don't think we can wait this long to upgrade our O-line.

Nice players, good job.

My rationale for the first pick:
I feel that the top four tackles will be off the board by the time they pick at 23 so that leaves the only feasable choice at O-line as Brandon Albert. At DB or WR, I believe either Sweed, Hardy, or King will be the options. I feel King may be a bit of a reach at 23 and I like Sweed over Hardy. So, that leaves Albert or Sweed. Either one would be a solid selection here but I went with Sweed based on the recent signing of Hartwig, the release of Wilson, and the tremendous depth of this year's offensive line class compared to the lack of depth in this year's class of wide receivers.

My rationale for the second pick:
I understand the Steelers pressing need at offensive line but if King is still available near the 53rd pick and he was considered at 23 a trade here makes sense to get a guy with first round talent on your board regardless of position.

My rationale for the third pick:
I haven't seen any soft qualities in Davis, just a motor and play making ability. I truly believe that the Steelers could go with Barton here but would choose Davis simply because they know he would not be available by the time they picked again at 119.

My rationale for the fourth pick:
3rd round talent on their board available at 119 makes it a no brainer. Barton is a player who has been very productive versus strong competition at the college level and I believe he will be just as solid of a pro player as Brandon Albert.

My rationale for the fifth pick:
Although he may not posess the most talent or best measureables of the defensive lineman on the board, in the fifth you take the player who you feel best fits your scheme and has the intangibles necessary to reach his full potential. The Steelers are showing strong interest in him and I believe he could be their guy at this point.

My rationale for the sixth pick:
Richardson is a guy who is intriguing but leaves a little bit to be desired in terms of his effort and preparation. This is the time of the draft where you can take a chance on a developmental prospect. I believe he can be a steal at this point if the Steelers can motivate him in the right way.
