You know your franchise has hit rock bottom when fans are getting excited about a 12-11 win on opening day.

Call me at the end of May, when we're already 10 games out of first.

There are a lot of reasons I left Western Pa. This kind of pessimism is one of the big ones.

Wanna give me a reason why I should be optimistic about this team? The way it's set up, we're looking at losing season #16 in a row, and they'll do so with ease. I'd love for them to prove me wrong, but I know they won't.

Because you claim to be a diehard Pirates fan, that's why. Geez - it's the first game of the season and they won, though it wasn't pretty. Give them a fair chance before you start condemning them.

I'll root for the Pirates, but don't expect me to attend any games or display any kind of optimism. In typical Bumbling Buc fashion, they almost blew this game. But they won, and I'll give them a fair chance...to drop below .500 by the end of the month. Maybe the underdog "everyone doubted them" route will help the Pirates.

You know, HTG. Loyal Pirates fans have been giving the Bucs a "fair chance" for 15 years now before having their hearts ripped out by disappointment. No doubt they deserve a winning team.

Remember last year when the Bucs opened the season by sweeping the Astros and people finally said they might have turned the corner? Losing season number 15 sprung up in no time flat.
I root for my hometown team no matter how bad they are, but I'll be damned if I'm going to start crucifying them after 1 game - a game which they WON, though it was admittedly a very ugly win. I want to wait to see what John Russell can do with this ballclub before I give them up for dead. He has to be a better manager than Tracy.

For the life of me what I can't understand is why "fans" who have no faith in them still continue to spend their hard earned money to attend their games.

I spent the money this year because I enjoy baseball and I missed going down to the ballpark last season. Yes, it means I'm putting money into the hands of "Midas" Nutting, but I'm not going to deprive myself of watching games live just to make a statement.

OK, I will give them a fair chance. This Russell seems like a decent guy and a better manager than Tracy, which isn't saying much considering a speck of dirt could be a better manager than Tracy. Plus, the players seem to like him. But I'm not going into it with a major positive attitude - we've been teased and let down too many times over the past 15 years to be anything more than cautiously optimistic.

Okay, HTG. Perhaps I am being a bit too hard on the Bucs and their new management. 15 years of losing will do that to you. They've been losers, but they're our losers. And we have to support them.

Guess we'll have to wait and see. It is game one out of one hundred and sixty two.
