Default Dolphins Sign Jake Long

Well guys the Phins are looking like they will sign him even before the draft!
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/dolphin...svc=7&cxcat=46

"The Dolphins are close enough in pre-draft negotiations with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long that a finalized contract could be announced any day, an NFL source told The Palm Beach Post today.

The source said "there's a very good chance" Long already will be under contract as the No. 1 pick before the NFL Draft begins at 3 p.m. Saturday at Radio City Music Hall in New York."

Looks like Jason will be staying with them then.

I know the scouts love the kid, but I just don't know that he's a #1 overall type of talent.

Dolphins reach contract agreement to make Long top overall pick
NFL.com Wire Reports

The Miami Dolphins have their man.

The Dolphins have reached an agreement with former Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long on a five-year, $57.5 million contract that includes $30 million in guaranteed money, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The Dolphins hold the No. 1 overall pick in Saturday's NFL Draft.

The Dolphins have been in negotiations with the representatives for Long, discussing contract parameters while attempting to keep their intentions with the top pick hidden. The Dolphins were also interested in trading the No. 1 pick, but no suitors surfaced.

The draft will be the first in Miami for the regime led by executive VP of football operations Bill Parcells, general manager Jeff Ireland and head coach Tony Sparano after the Dolphins went 1-15 last year. Miami has nine picks, including four of the first 64.

Ridiculous money for an unproven player. Nobody has any idea whether this kid is going to be another Anthony Mu?oz or another Tony Mandarich. When bad teams have to shell out these kinds of guaranteed dollars for top 5 picks and they don't pan out, it kind of defeats the purpose of the high draft pick, does it not? Kinda hard to rebuild when you're in salary cap hell, no? They need to cap rookie salaries and guarantees.

I have to agree with you there...these guys haven't proven ANYTHING except that they can play in college. The NFL needs to come up with a way to filter some of that rookie cap money back to the veterans who have PROVEN they can play in the NFL.

I kind of like the rookie cap system that the NBA uses, however I think it needs to be tweaked to work in the NFL. There is a big difference between what some positions should be payed vs others. Each position should have a premium on it, and then the 2nd player taken at that position gets a little less and so on. The question then becomes one of contract length. I think you make it a 3 year contract with a 5 year option at the clubs discretion BUT then you build in some incentives that if the player meets those incentives the club loses their year 4,5 option. I also think they should build in some financial incentives for production.

Just my thoughts!
