Walter Mendenhall leaves Illinois for Illinois State

Running back Walter Mendenhall has made his plans to transfer from Illinois final, enrolling at Illinois State as a grad student and joining the football team.

Redbirds coach Denver Johnson says Mendenhall has started working out with the team.

His brother, Rashard Mendenhall, led the Illini and the Big Ten in rushing. The Steelers drafted him in the first round of this year's NFL draft. Walter Mendenhall left Illinois after getting only limited playing time. He carried the ball four times for 57 yards last season.

Walter Mendenhall will compete for playing time with last year's starter, Geno Blow, and three other tailbacks. The 6-foot, 225-pound Mendenhall has graduated from Illinois but has a year of eligibility left.

interesting, either he couldn't get the starting job at Illinois or had a problem with the coaching staff.

Coaching problem
..all the Illinois State and University of Illinois blogs are saying that Zook is pressuring players that he didnt sign...to leave. Also allegations that he only kept Walter on the roster, to keep his brother at Illinois.

Seems then that our new player got fed up with the politics of the game.

Can't blame him for that.

And hey... to get a year of a master's program out of it.... that isn't a loss at all!!
