Update: Herron foils break-in, belts would-be burglar

HOWARD -- Green Bay Packers running back Noah Herron thwarted a break-in at his home on Friday night by slugging one of the intruders with a bed post, the Brown County Sheriff’s Department reported today.


Authorities went to Herron’s home at 11:19 p.m. Friday on a report of a burglary in progress, according to Chief Deputy John Gossage. Herron told police he heard glass breaking in the lower level of his home, and that an unknown number of people had entered.

Herron hit the intruder who entered his bedroom with a post he’d unscrewed from his bed, Gossage said in a news release.

The offender was injured and remains hospitalized, according to Sheriff Dennis Kocken, who added that the injured suspect was expected to recover. Herron was not injured.

“Noah Herron used necessary, reasonable and justifiable force in protecting his life and property,” Kocken said in a press release. “Herron, the victim in this random home invasion, is cooperating with law enforcement.”

A second suspect was arrested outside the home and remains in the Brown County Jail on unrelated warrants and a probation hold.

Kocken said the incident was not made public until today because of the need to execute search warrants in the case.

“We didn’t want the property to disappear,” he said this afternoon. The methods of operation are similar to other area burglaries.

Property believed stolen Friday night from another Howard home was recovered later that night near Herron’s home, as was a vehicle.

Neither of the suspects has been charged, but both were described by Gossage as “people of interest” in a string of burglaries and home invasions throughout the county.

WBAY-TV reported the case involves about 20 burglaries in De Pere, Howard and Bellevue.

Herron wouldn't comment on the incident, but Packers General Manager Ted Thompson released a statement this afternoon:

“We’re aware of an incident that occurred in Noah Herron’s home late Friday evening and have spoken to Noah about it. We support Noah, and ask that his privacy be respected. Noah and the Packers will have no further comments on this matter.”

The 5-foot-11, 218-pound Herron, 26, has been with the Packers since November 2005.
