Default Georgia's Uga VI dies of heart failure

Georgia's Uga VI to be buried with previous mascots

ATHENS, Ga. -- Uga VI, the beloved University of Georgia mascot, has died from congestive heart failure at his home in Savannah.

The bulldog's owner, Frank Seiler, said he had the best winning record of any mascot in the school's history.

Seiler said he noticed the nine-year-old English Bulldog was breathing heavily Friday night. He passed away soon afterward.

Uga will be buried in a vault in the Southwest corner of Sanford Stadium with his predecessors. Private ceremonies are expected early next week.

Uga VI became UGA's mascot in 1999. He was the son of Uga V, the only college mascot to land on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

University of Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans called it "a sad day for the entire Bulldog nation."

Damon Evans, UGA athletics director, bestowed the highest praise on the beast that he could Saturday, in a statement:

"Uga VI was a damn good mascot and a damn good dog," said Evans

RIP, Uga VI.

And on a side note, if you suffer from dry eyes and are on the drug Restasis, you can thank one of Uga's predecessor's, (probably his father) who was the inspiration for the revolutionary treatment. (I work in ophthalmology. )

Further proof that nobody takes their college football as seriously as they do in the SEC

Whatchaya Got Loran, better known to the world as Uga VI, will be laid to rest Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Sanford Stadium....

Like his five predecessors, Uga VI will be interred in specially-built marble vault built into the side of the south grandstands just inside the main gate of the southwest side of the stadium. According to UGA, it is the only school that buries its mascots within the confines of the stadium.

A private ceremony will precede the burial. The Rev. Claude McBride, a Baptist preacher and former chaplain for the football team, will officiate. UGA president Michael Adams will be among those to make remarks.

For those uninitiated in the holy rituals of UGA football, UGA VI's non-royal name refers to the famous question of Georgia radio play-by-play announcer Larry Munson (venerated as a UGA combination of Bob Prince & Myron Cope) when communicating with sideline reporter Loran Smith.

That's cool they bury the little guys at the stadium.

Maybe we can find a spot for McBeam in Heinz Field.

And I thought Tim Russert's send off was a big deal

The body of the dog, whose registered name was Uga V's Whatchagot Loran, was flown to Athens from Savannah along with his master's family in the university plane. It entered Sanford Stadium from the northeast corner and was carried inside his famous kennel on the back of a golf cart across the field. His entry was accompanied by the song, "The Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation," which is played before Georgia football games.

Pallbearers Charles Seiler, his main handler, and Waldo Terrell, UGA's chief groundskeeper, removed the kennel and placed it at the foot of a granite and marble mausoleum where Uga's five predecessors are buried. Charles Seiler draped Uga's jersey and collar over the kennel.
...

The Rev. Claude McBride of Athens, a Baptist preacher and former football team chaplain, presided. He offered words of gratitude and appreciation to the Seiler family and a long prayer, which he ended with, "Sic 'em, Uga. Woof, woof! Amen."

Numerous flower arrangements, mostly of roses and white and red carnations, adorned the memorial plot in the southwest corner of the stadium. Included was one from "Tusk," the razorback mascot from the University of Arkansas.
