Barden Gives Up Control Of North Shore Casino

HARRISBURG (KDKA) ― Developer Don Barden is giving up majority control of the Majestic Star Casino on Pittsburgh's North Shore

Under a proposal presented before the state Gaming Control Board in Harrisburg today, Barden would become part of the management of new team called High Pitt Gambling.

Due to his financial issues, Barden created this new partnership with Greg Carlin, Real-estate magnate Neil Bluhm and his brother Andrew Bluhm. Carlin would be the new CEO under the plarn.

While PITG Gaming would be the principle licensee and indirect owner of holdings, Barden's attorney told KDKA's Jon Delano that Barden will no longer be the majority owner of the new company.

He still will make $$ out of something he never should have been awarded in the first place.

One more reason I was hoping IOC would get the license. But the Penguins still have their arena anyway.

HA!!! Called this one! I knew he would eventually lose control of that casino, which he shouldn't have gotten in the first place. Only in Pennsylvania would the government award him a license of this magnitude, even though they knew he had problems with his finances. I mean, the guy was running casinos in the RED for crying out loud. It's another case of politicians in PA being "baffled by bullshit" rather than looking at the cold, hard numbers (and risk losing a couple hundred thousand bucks in kickbacks - right Mr. Rendell?). This also doesn't look good for Jerome Bettis, who was one of Barden's biggest backers and really pushed for him to get the license.

I have been following the collapse of Barden's operation - in further support of HTG educting me on how corrupt this is, I noted the following this morning:

A flurry of calls involving state leaders, investors in Pittsburgh's casino and two state gambling regulators -- calls that resulted in a deal to shore up the casino's finances -- have prompted charges by opponents that undue influence was brought to bear. ...

The leaders of an investment team that soon could have a 75 percent stake in the casino donated more than $200,000 to Rendell from 2000 to 2006, state records show. Include their donations to the Democratic National Committee when Rendell was the national party chairman, and the total rises to more than $300,000.
