Default Kirwan: Whis "Unsung Hero"

Ken Whisenhunt, offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers. It gets to the point where people take winning for granted when they discuss the Steelers. Since Whisenhunt has taken over as the offensive coordinator, the team has gone 23-4, and no one mentions him as a head-coach candidate.

Ken Whisenhunt might be calling all the shots for another NFL team next season.
Whisenhunt now has gone to his third quarterback this season, and the team keeps on winning. The offense he has designed and built can withstand the loss of a QB like Roethlisberger for a few weeks and still put up enough points on the board to win. Against Cleveland, Pittsburgh put up 34 points with three different players throwing passes, the third- and fourth-string running backs leading the team in rushing. The system obviously works.

For the season, Pittsburgh's offense is No. 4 in the league in rushing, and it has the fewest offensive penalties in the NFL. It is near the bottom of the league in third-down conversions (31 percent) but when you look inside that number, you also find out they have had the fewest third downs in the NFL this season. Whisenhunt's offense moves the ball on first and second downs to the point that they have had only 31 third downs all season.

His name is Whisenhunt: He played in the NFL, he's young and he does things the Steelers way. Put him on your short list for a promotion.

Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt's name was thrown into the mix as a possible replacement for Houston coach Dom Capers, who is expected to be fired after the Texans' season finale against San Francisco on Sunday. The Houston Chronicle listed him as a potential candidate for the job, along with several other coordinators, including Gary Kubiak of Denver, Jerry Gray of Buffalo and Ron Rivera of Chicago, among others.

I kinda like the fact that he has flown under the radar, maybe we can keep him?

Over the years it seems like our former offensive and defensive coordinators make up a large portion of the NFL's head coaches. If you want to be a head coach in the NFL... the best route is through Pittsburgh.

Down here in DC it's been said that Redskins D-Coordinator Greg Williams is in the running for the Texans job as well.
