Default Steelers Notebook: Sore groin limits Big Ben's practice

Steelers Notebook: Sore groin limits Big Ben's practice
Sunday, August 03, 2008
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The first week of training camp ended the way it began at Saint Vincent College -- with a nagging injury to a significant player.

This time, though, the injured player was quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who did not participate in team drills yesterday because of a sore groin. His status was listed as day-to-day by coach Mike Tomlin.

Roethlisberger did take part in 7-on-7 drills and threw several medium to deep passes to his receivers without discomfort.

Roethlisberger was affected by the injury Friday night when he did not finish the team's practice at Latrobe Stadium.

"We knew he was going to be little sore coming out and we wanted to give it a go and see if he could get it warm," Tomlin said. "It's always a quality opportunity to give reps to young guys like [rookie quarterbacks] Dennis Dixon and Mike Potts."

Injury update
Left outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley (groin) did not practice and is also listed as day-to-day. His injury forced Pro Bowl linebacker James Harrison to move to the left side with inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons moving to right outside linebacker.

Also, rookie linebacker Mike Humpal (hamstring), a sixth-round choice from Iowa, did not practice. He is listed day-to-day.

Gildon replaces Greene again
Just like he did during his playing days with the Steelers, Jason Gildon has replaced Kevin Greene as a volunteer coach working with the linebackers.

Gildon (1994-2003), the club's all-time leader in sacks (77) and a three-time Pro Bowl selection at outside linebacker, will spend the second week of training camp helping to develop Woodley and Timmons.

Greene, who played with the Steelers from 1993-1995, worked with the linebackers last week.

Also at camp, but just as an observer, was former inside linebacker Jerry Olsavsky. Olsavsky, who played at Pitt and then with Gildon for the Steelers, is an assistant coach at Youngstown State University.

"He knew how to rush the passer," Olsavsky said of Gildon. "I think the first time we played Miami, [Pro Bowl tackle] Richmond Webb couldn't even touch him."

Roster switch
The Steelers brought back center Doug Legursky to their training camp roster, a month after they released the rookie free agent from Marshall.

To make room for Legursky (6-1, 323), the team waived rookie kicker Julian Rauch, an undrafted free agent from Appalachian State.

Legursky, a three-time All-Conference USA selection who started his final 32 games at Marshall, was signed shortly after the draft in April but released June 29.

Quick hits
Nose tackle Casey Hampton worked out with conditioning assistant Marcel Pastoor on an adjacent field in the morning, but no timetable has been set for his return. Hampton was placed on the physically unable to perform list for reporting nearly 40 pounds overweight. ... Wide receiver Santonio Holmes was excused for a second day because of a death in the family. He is expected to return today ... The Steelers will practice only once today at 2:55 p.m. The session is open to the public and will feature the first goal-line drill of training camp, pitting the first-team offense against the first-team defense. Tomlin said the drill will be a best-of-seven from just outside the 1, with the first unit to four declared the winner. "It's going to be good time," Tomlin said. "That's always a crowd favorite. Our team looks forward to it."
