Default Cribbs Wants More Money

Quote:
Browns KR Cribbs looking to restructure current deal

By James Walker
ESPN.com

Pro Bowl kick returner Joshua Cribbs wants to restructure his contract with the Cleveland Browns, multiple sources have told ESPN.com. But progress has been slow this summer because Cribbs has five years remaining on his current deal.

Cribbs signed a six-year contract worth just under $6 million before the 2007 season.

Since then Cribbs has led the NFL in total return yards, in addition to leading the Browns in special teams tackles last year. Now, according to sources, Cribbs and his representation are seeking a pay increase and recently approached the Browns about their desire for a new deal.

Perhaps prompting even more urgency is the recent contract for Chicago Bears kick returner Devin Hester, who received a four-year extension worth up $40 million with $15 million guaranteed.

Both Cribbs and Hester are widely regarded as the top special teams players in their respective conferences, yet there is a big salary disparity between the two. Hester's average annual salary was bumped up to approximately $5.5 million, compared to Cribbs' annual average of $997,000.

It's unknown at this point what type of deal Cribbs is seeking. But based on his production, it's likely Cribbs wants a contract comparable to Hester's in terms of guaranteed money.

Cleveland is considered one of the up-and-coming teams in the NFL, coming off a 10-6 season that saw seven players make the Pro Bowl in 2007. But success also came with a price as players such as quarterback Derek Anderson, running back Jamal Lewis and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers all received sizable deals with Cleveland this offseason.

Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. also has expressed displeasure with his current contract. But general manager Phil Savage said publicly in June that the team is at or near its budget.

after hester's new contract I can see why

but does he deserve it? hester is going to be a main part of their offense, cribbs barely plays offense, but he is possibly the best special teams player in the league

still, I really doubt the browns pay him a hester type contract

No ST player, even if they're a stud on STs, is worth $5.5 mil a season. If he becomes a regular and solid contributor on offense, I could kind of see it.

Do I blame him? No.
Are NFL players greedy? Yes, but that's with all professional athletes (the major sports).

Unfortunately for Cribbs, it's a lot harder for him to get his money. Good Ol Salary Cap.

This will be the downfall of the Browns. They have a bunch of guys who will want more money in the coming couple of years. Cribbs just signed an extension and now wants to re-do again.

Hester and his coaches HOPE he will become a regular part of the offense. For now, he's a one trick pony...and he screws that up as much as he gets it right! (Fumbles vs TDs)

Cribbs is a former college QB who covers kicks, punts, returns both and is having special packages being installed in the offense to take advantage of his special talents.

It's unfortunate that the Bears wasted so much money on Hester, because I think this will hurt the Browns chances or special teams in the future. Cribbs is easily a better ST player.

actually, it may hurt every team that has a special teams standout. they will all want fat contracts. luckily there aren't too much standouts in the league right now, but in the future they may be....
