REPORT: STEELERS, FARRIOR CLOSE TO NEW DEAL
Posted by Mike Florio on August 20, 2008, 11:56 p.m. EDT
Our friends at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh (actually, we donít really know them, but they seem nice) report that the Steelers and linebacker James Farrior are close to working out a contract extension.

Farrior is entering the last year of his current deal. Heís due to earn a base salary of $3.24 million in 2008.

The 1997 first-rounder from Virginia spent five seasons with the Jets before joining the Steelers in 2002. He has started all but four regular-season games in his six years with the Steelers.

Per the report, the deal could come as soon as tomorrow, and likely will be hammered out before Saturdayís game against the Vikings.

The Steelers typically donít negotiate contracts with current players once the regular season opens.

Yeah, belive it when I see it. Would offer a bit of cap relief and hopefully they then get on the horn to Marvel Smith's agent and start negotiating.

This came from KDKA? I didn't watch the news tonight. Let me check their site, hold please....

*elevator music*

Nothing on KDKA site. I'll believe it when I see it, but it would make me a happy Steelers fan. Farrior is one of my favorite players, easily.

WHAT??? we dont need joe horn! we drafted limas sweed.

(reading comprehension is our friend, people)

if any player is worthy of the rooneys foregoing their "players over 30 years of age, aint worth shit" rule, it is farrior.

according to the statlines my man james had his 2nd best season of his career last season (his best being in 04 when he was robbed of defensive mvp honors by ed reed)..

if this is true, it would be atrue testament of someobody being a team player and taking a nice "hometown discount".

if true, he will be rewarded nicely (he earned it much more than starks) but we dont need much caproom (according to gil brandt today on sirius we are still $1.5 mil under).

i hope this "report" is true. farrior has got tons left to contribute and is a bonafide leader of this defense and team.

Why does this sound almost too good to be true?

I would LOVE to see Farrior take the hometown discount. He's one of my favorite players, and he's looking younger! ( OK, as young as you can look at his age jk!)

I hope it happens, but I don't have my fingers crossed.

It would be nice to keep him but as stated above I will believe it when I see it.

Signing Farrior would be a sign to me that Dan Rooney has some money not dedicated to buying his brothers shares of ownerhsip of the Steelers.

Remember the Steelers dont negotiate extensions once the season starts. So they only have a little over 2 weeks to nail one down

A cap friendly 2-yr extension would be nice. Farrior still has a lot of good games in him imo
