LOL, I have faith...I just don't agree with the statment that Cowher's leaving left us unable to "impose out will" aka run hard between the tackles.
Who have we had for that power run game since Bettis left? John Kuhn, Najeh Davenport. Neither of them could get it done in that apect of the game. When Bettis retired, so did our abiliy to pound the tough yards on the ground because we didn't have a back who could do it. I hope Mendenhall becomes that back. He's got the talent, now he just has to learn how to run between the tackles.

6 of those guys are gone (5 starters). the power run game has been replaced. coaches shuch as cowher and shottenhiemer have been replaced in the league. it is kind of a dinosaur of an offense from the late 70's and 80's philosophy. it has been replaced with a franchise quarterback and a power passing game, much like the one the steelers evolved to in the late 70's. anyways, cowher and jerome would be much more successful in the post season with a power pass game as opposed to a power run game. their success pre-ben and post ben prove that.

A power run game + Ben scares me far more than Ben + FWP and smaller backs. The issue that they have to contend with now is they are transforming from a power-run team to a team that wants to pass more (and evolve into something with West Coast guidelines) That's like asking a defense to go from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Huge difference in philosophy and requires a different type of player (particularly amongst the Line.) The difference in the Steelers success isn't in the type of run/pass style used...but the difference in the QB behind center. I have very little doubt that the Steelers would have beaten the Cowboys in the SB if they had Ben behind center as opposed to Neil (K. Smith's best friend) O'donnel.

2005 proves that. make the playoff run and put up points with the passing game and seal the deal by grinding it out. many times cowher lacked that power passer (can even call it a franchise qb if you want to) and tried to put up points and grind it out with the run in the 1st half. it became predictable and teams had years to develop effective gameplans against it. if you disagree with that, i think its really over semantics.

In this case, it was a difference in what we felt was a power passer. It seemed (to me) like you were inferring that the Steelers needed to resort more to a power passing game (i.e. pass much more and use it to set up the run) than just having a better QB. Sorry for the confusion.

I am afraid that I have to agree with most of what this guy said....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- James from Orangevale, Calif. writes: James love your blog. I watched every scrap of video on the net I could find on Rashard Mendenhall and his highlights look like his preseason - lots of speed with no power. Running between the tackles is not his forte & I doubt he will develop a 'taste' for it. The steelers lost their ability to impose their will on a defense when Cowher left, your thoughts? |
