Starting offense will play first quarter

By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, August 28, 2008

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the rest of the starting offense will play the first quarter of tonight's final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers at Heinz Field. Expect to see plenty of reserve quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon over the final three quarters, coach Mike Tomlin said. "We are going to play (Dixon) and Byron a bunch," Tomlin said. Last week against Minnesota, Leftwich played the entire seasond half, while Dixon did not see any action.

Tomlin said the battle for the fourth receiver spot remains open between rookie Limas Sweed, Dallas Baker and Willie Reid. "Those guys have had good moments and they have had moments that have not been as good," Tomlin said. "This is a hotly contested battle, and one that may be waged (tonight) and might ultimately decide how those spots unfold." The Steelers are expected to keep at least five receivers.

Linebackers Larry Foote (knee) and Mike Humpal (stingers) didn't practice yesterday and will not play tonight. Safety Ryan Mundy (ankle) didn't practice and Tomlin said he is "questionable."

Former Pitt standout Jeff Otah, 19th-overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, is listed on the depth chart as the starting right tackle for Carolina. Former Steelers defensive back Ricardo Colclough is listed as the starting right cornerback for the Panthers.

Lol, Ricardo's back. I would like to see what he does.

IMO if the first team offense would have played well Saturday night against the Vikes they (or at least Ben) would have sat out tonight - with Coclough at the starting corner there is no excuse for whomever Coke is covering not having a big night

Let's just hope nobody gets injured

If anyone thinks that Sweed is not going to have a roster spot, they're crazy. And there's no way he'll clear waivers to be on the PS. So he's one that you can count on the 53 man roster.

He may be relegated to STs and the occassionaly 5 WR sets, but he'll be on the roster..

And I agree..no one gets hurt tonight.

Compared to most other teams, the Steelers seem pretty darn healthy to start the season. Lots of major injuries across the league.

Here's to an injury free game........

The Rule in the NFL in order to succeed in the playoffs. The team with the most people standing wins.

With Taylor off Washington, Osi and Strahan off the Giants, Merriman doing his best one legged asskicker impression out in SD, that "toughest schedule in football" doesn't seem as tough now does it.

Guess who don't want to play if you are one of those teams. A Healthy Steelers team. that's for dang sure. Aaron Smith, Troy P, Willie P, all healthy. Look out Loretta!

Quite true. I've not worried too much about the tough schedule of non-division opponents we have this year, but the wear and tear it causes is very problematic going into the playoffs against a relatively fresh team. The disgracefully easy schedule the Pats have makes me froth at the mouth.

lets not get to profanityfilterprofanityfilterprofanityfilterprofa nityfiltery with the no injuries talk. a healthy team can turn into an injured team in one bad game.

but lets keep those fingers crossed.
