Question What is the problem with our O-Line?

Ok, we all know that the O-Line hasn't been playing up to the level that it did last year. Why do you guys think? I don't think we can blame Faneca or Marvel, they're both excellant players and give their all every game. I personally believe we need a new Center. I just don't think Jeff has it in him anymore. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it for these next few, tough games.

Edit: I tried to post a poll, but i apparently took too long. My choices were..

-Max is just young and inexperienced and needs to get comfortable in NFL play
-Kendall hasn't played for a year, and just isn't the same player since his diabetes hit
-Jeff is just old and doesn't have it in him anymore.
-Nothing, the QB switches and Marvel's injury have just thrown them off

I also believe it's Hartings. We will have to address this in next years draft. Also, I don't think Starks is giood as everybody thinks he is.

I think that it's a mixture of age, injury, and the QB shuffle.
The Steelers don't seem to run block as well as they did last season but part of it is probably game-planning by opposing coaches. Last year, I think Pittsburgh might have surprised some people with the way they ran the ball down people's throats. This season there was no mystery as to the game-plan.
Plus, Ben gives the line some cushion if they screw up because he's so darn tough to bring down and he won't freeze, a la Turnover Tommy, if there is pressure.

Sorry about the repost but thought it pertained to this also.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Indianapolis Colts

Colts DEs Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis vs. the beat-up Steelers' offensive line
The re-emergence of QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) will make it more difficult for opposing pass rushers to sack the Steelers' quarterback, but for the offense to be at peak efficiency, Roethlisberger must get time to find his receivers (some of whom are having problems getting open). Mathis and Freeney have combined for 17 sacks in 10 games (an NFL-high 10 for Mathis), and he will be going against ORT Max Star who is not having a great season. On the other side, the explosive Freeney will have for his victim either rookie third-round draft pick Trai Essex or injured Marvel Smith at left tackle. If the Colts' pass rushers take the struggling Steelers' offense out of its rhythm, the game will get out of hand early and the Steelers will depart Indianapolis as a second-place team. The play of Essex and Starks and veteran C Jeff Hartings, whose knee is acting up again, will determine the outcome of this game Monday night.

I'm not sure what the problem is Taz, but I don't think our O-line is as good as Steeler Nation thinks it is...

Bouchette of P-G has said a big problem is Kendall Simmons - not only physical difficulties but repeatedly missing the play that is called (which I suppose could be tied to fatigue).

Add to that a drop-off by Hartings (even if he was playing to last year's level his salary next year would be too high to bring him back in 2006) and breaking in a new right tackle, then you have problems.

I am not giving up on this season (unless they lose to the Bengals at home) but let's face it - 2004 was a magical year where it all went right until the playoffs. In the parity driven NFL you do not stay on top forever and the second Cowher run of success that began in 2001 may be ebbing with a lot of the players that have been here for that run aging (Bettis/Faneca/D-line/Porter) and starting to slip.

I think it has more to do with injuries and the QB shuffle as well as the added RB shuffle. The line needs to be comfortable with each other, but also with the timing of the running back, and the ability of the QB. With Willie, they need to get a good burst off the snap to open up the holes faster, but didnt have to sustain or drive the def as long, switch to Bettis or Duce and they have to drive them, hold the blocks longer. Same with the QB's, Ben can move in the pocket, and out of it, Maddox can not do either. Ben in there is more "forgiving" if the line misses an assignment or whatever cause he can just move and throw. How many times did Ben have to scramble last year but made the plays so it was just overlooked that the line didnt hold up. This year Tommy gets sacked when Ben wouldnt have, the def of other teams stack everyone in the box cause Turnover Tommy cant beat them, add the injuries and it makes our line look bad. When Ben was in there we had several dominating running performances. Also, Willie is not a pounding RB like Bettis, so he is not going to wear the Def down like Bettis does.
