Lightbulb Duce on 3rd downs

From the post gazette..

Quote:
NOTES -- It appears that, for the first time this season, the Steelers will dress halfbacks Willie Parker, Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley at the same time. With Parker starting at halfback, it's possible Staley could take over the third-down duties of Verron Haynes.
I think this could be a good move for us. It keeps all 3 backs in the game and in the flow so they dont get rusty..and duce is fast enough and powerful enough to be a good force on 3rd downs. This could be a good thing.

Duce can catch it out of the backfield also. We need to look to use hm more in this manner to open things up more. Same thing with Parker, give him some passes in the flats and let him make some people miss. We have some capable weapons, we just need to use them.

Amen...Duce is an excellent receiving RB, and the best blocking back in the NFL.

i think this is how the steelers should stay the rest of the year
Start the game with Parker, pound it with bettis, and once the defense get tired, let duce run, hes got more speed then bettis and more power than parker
The defense will be hurting come 4th quarter......
They will be forced to play the run, and ben should have plenty of open receivers of the play action.

I'm more of the mindset to let one back get into a rhythm.

I'd like to see a rotation of just two backs, but with Cowher favoring Haynes so heavily on 3rd downs, it's pretty tough to get everyone else enough carries to keep them feeling as though they are part of the game.

If it was me, I'd start the Bus and rotate in Staley. Yes, I like power in the Steelers running game, especially against the small Colts D.

HERE WE GO.

All this shuffling is starting to wear me out. I'm a little surprised that Cowher is going to activate Duce becuase he's been so set with getting Haynes plays in the offense, whether blocking or touching the ball.
As for Duce's abilities as a blocking back, I don't know because he hasn't played very much. I do know that he seems pretty smart and fearless, plus I'm sure he's sick of sitting on the sidelines, so he should offer Ben some more protection. With M. Smith probably not as mobile because of the ankle, who ever is in on third down better be ready to pick up Freeney if he blazes around the outside.
