DETROIT -- The disappointing Detroit Lions fired coach Steve Mariucci and some of his assistants on Monday.

After Detroit lost 27-7 to the Atlanta Falcons on Thanksgiving to fall to 4-7, reports swirled that the team was considering firing Mariucci. When Mariucci was not let go over the weekend, some thought his job was safe for the final five games of the regular season.

Mariucci and the assistants, tight ends coach coach Andy Sugarman and OL coach Pat Morris, were fired late Monday morning.

The Lions have lost four of five games since a solid start put them atop the NFC North with the Chicago Bears. The team has collapsed on and off the field with players failing to produce and some bickering with one another and questioning the coaches' game plans.

Mariucci's record with the Lions was 15-28. His hiring was hailed by fans and media alike, but he was not able to turn around a team that has won one playoff game since 1957.

Mariucci has more than two years remaining on the $25 million contract he signed in 2003. The Michigan native came to the Lions from San Francisco, where he was 60-43 over six seasons.

This Lion's offseason'll be interesting. Mike Martz'll be watching his phone...

Not quite getting this one...I've never understood firing coaches in the midle of the season to begin with, and this one is kind of knuckleheaded on top of that. I think maybe they should fire Matt Millen...he has a shoddy history of drafting, and Harrington looks like a possible bust. Who do they think is available that will do a better job?

Well, at least they have an assistant coach with great H.C. credentials just waiting on the sidelines. If Dick "The Corpse" Jauron gets the "interim" title get ready for some Motor City Mahem from the fans. About the only team he could beat when he was in Chicago was the Lions. Maybe the Lions could hire Wanny away from Pitt and they could get a real coach.

Indeed Matt Millen should be on the hotseat as well.
It was Millen's brainstorm when the Lions hired Marty Morningwheg as head coach when he took over as GM and firing Mariucci with 5 games left in the season doesn't make much sense.

The Lions will probably mail-in the rest of the season.

look what that worthless jackass qb caused, if harrington had an ounce of talent no one would've had to be fired. now i hope they keep harrington and draft a qb and start him right away and let harrington rot on the bench and then tell everyone in the league not to even attempt to sign him cause better options would be to sign vinny or maddox.
