Default Polamalu, McFadden get banged up

Polamalu, McFadden get banged up
By Scott Brown
Monday, October 20, 2008

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and cornerback Bryant McFadden each left Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals with injuries and didn't return. Polamalu sustained a head injury when he tackled Bengals running game Cedric Benson early in the fourth quarter. McFadden appeared to hurt his elbow on the same play, and Steelers coach Mike Tomlin indicated that the fourth-year veteran could miss time because of it. "Hopefully, it's not anything long-term, but if it is, we accept it," Tomlin said. "That's the nature of football, and the next men have to be ready to step up."

Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers had his jaw broken by Steelers receiver Hines Ward early in the game and is likely out for the rest of the season, Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis said. Rivers left the game after Ward blasted him while blocking following a Matt Spaeth reception.

As expected running back Willie Parker (knee), nose tackle Casey Hampton (groin) and left tackle Marvel Smith (back) didn't play against the Bengals. Also inactive because of injuries were fullback Carey Davis (ankle), linebacker Keyaron Fox (hamstring) and receiver Dallas Baker (shoulder). Rounding out the Steelers' list of inactives were offensive tackle Tony Hills and Dennis Dixon (third quarterback).

Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed made his first career reception. The rookie second-round pick caught an 11-yard pass from backup quarterback Byron Leftwich near the end of the game.

Ward has caught at least one pass in 152 consecutive regular-season games.

16 -- Combined sacks this season by Steelers outside linebackers James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley.

24 -- Steelers' single-season record for sacks by a pair of teammates.
