Default Lions Marinelli irked at questions about Cherilus' benching.

Lions' Marinelli irked by questions about Cherilus' benching
By CARLOS MONARREZ • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • October 17, 2008

Lions coach Rod Marinelli was fired up after practice and bristled when he was asked about the decision to bench rookie right tackle Gosder Cherilus, a first-round draft pick.

“I don’t think there’s a right of entitlement,” Marinelli said. “I don’t care what draft status is. Do you understand what that means, draft status? I look at a team.

"Some of you guys sit up in the bleachers all day eating popcorn looking down. I’m in the middle of the arena, in a team meeting, and if I’m 0-5 or 5-0 I look at those men with the same consistent message. The guy who’s playing well is gonna play. That respects our game. Do you understand what respect of this game means?”

Marinelli said he wants to change the culture of entitlement by creating a competitive environment that disregards a player’s draft status.

“And the way you hurt high draft picks in the past here: ‘Hey, it’s yours. C’mon, yours. You can mess up all you want. You can gain weight. You can do anything you want and you’re going to still play,’” Marinelli said. “That insults this game now. That insults it.”

Marinelli said he did not understand why such a big fuss was made over Cherilus’ demotion, which was made public Thursday.

“All of a sudden this guy is put down and a big deal is made of that,” Marinelli said. “I don’t see it as a big deal. I see a way of helping this guy getting back on and being good. I’m not about giving somebody something.”

Marinelli said Cherilus needs to improve in some key areas to regain his spot and that his effort has been noticeable in practice this week since he was benched after the first half at Minnesota. George Foster took over in the second half and will start Sunday at Houston.

“Techniques, maybe some things in assignment errors,” Marinelli said of Cherilus’ deficiencies. “We’ve got to clean that up and we’ve got to give ourself the best chance, the best opportunity to win. There’s no free lunches in the NFL.

“That’s the fastest way to get back on the field, in practice. And I’ll tell you what. He came out fired up and really had a heck of a practice the other day. That’s what I’m looking for, that competition.”

I don't think Marinelli has done the Lions any great favors, but good for him for not giving any of his guys free passes.

Its a good move for Marinelli. I got hacked back in april for saying that rookies dont normally step in and start.....especially on the O line, because its tough to learn it all in 2 months.

Some Steeler fans thought he was our LT of the future and Cherilus might still turn out to be a good pick, but he's clearly gonna take some time to make the transition to be an NFL starter at RT.
