News Anchor Fooled By Prankster On Palin

Palin Story Attributed To Non-Existent Source, Institute

POSTED: 8:20 am EST November 13, 2008
UPDATED: 8:52 am EST November 13, 2008

NEW YORK -- MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said.
The cable news operation joins the ranks of Los Angeles Times, The New Republic, Mother Jones and other publications as among those successfully targeted by the prankster.
David Shuster, an anchor for MSNBC, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.
Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy.
Neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.
"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."
Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.
The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin -- not the Fox News story itself. The story surfaced at the end of the presidential campaign, as an anecdote from Palin's preparations for her vice presidential debate with Democratic Sen. Joe Biden.
While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.
Rick Davis, John McCain's presidential campaign manager, told Fox News Wednesday that he still doesn't know who began spreading the story about Palin's knowledge of Africa.
"A bunch of people taking out a grudge, I guess," he said. "Sarah Palin knows the difference between a continent and a country."
Davis said he wasn't on hand for the debate preparations, but said "I have total confidence that Gov. Palin knows exactly what she was doing."
"What happens when you lose campaigns is that everybody, you know, takes out their anxieties on each other," he said.
Eisenstadt's "work" had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.
Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt's blog.
And in July, Jonathan Stein of Mother Jones magazine blogged an item about Eisenstadt speaking on Iraqi television about a casino in Baghdad's "Green Zone."
Stein later realized he'd been had.
"Kudos to the inventor of this whole thing," Stein wrote. "My only consolation is that if I had as much time on my hands as he clearly does, I probably would have figured this out and saved myself a fair amount of embarrassment."

The left still fears her because she thinks just like Reagan and has the potential of starting a movement among conservatives in this country that scares the left.

With the Freedom of Choice Act already being attacked by the Catholic Churches, and the number of Black and Hispanic voters that voted Conservative on the Prop 8 issue in California, banning Gay Marriage, while they also voted for Obama, it is clear that when it comes to Religion and Conservative Moral Values, the Morals still exist deep in this country.

Pro Life, Anti-Gay marriage, Cutting Taxes, Being Fiscally Responsible. Sounds like Reagan to me.

The left will continue to attack her at every chance they get because they Fear her and what she represents.

I'm still not a huge fan, but nobody deserves that kind of treatment. There was an initial wave of positive pub (for like one day) and then it was just a constant bashing, and not just from the left. Conservatives ripped her up plenty, too...Katherine Parker, Krauth...there was just a ruthless and unending assault on her.

What I find real interesting, is some of the feminists have started coming to her defense.

Life is going to get real interesting in the political world.

Not too surprising...any feminist with a brain knows the media treatment of Palin harms all women, including women they agree with who might run in the future.

What's sad though is this admission could lead the nightly news for a week and be a two-inch headline in every paper and her critics will still insist the hoax was true.

Of course, because reality isn't what is true, but what one wants to be true, least in the political world.

nice try guys. and if you saw palins interview with van susteren you woulda caught the part about feminists "clinging to their beliefs" (or something like that). whatever it was, it didnt sound good.

nothing that has been "reported" is really that unbelievable except the part about her answering the hotel door in nothing but a towel.

even i am pretty skeptical about that one....

(although nothing would suprise me.)

Yea, people become governor of a state without knowing if Africa is a continent or country. LOL.

Its the same people who call bush stupid or dumb.

These people get to the highest position in government yet they are stupid.

Just watch her speech she gave at the governors conv and you can see that the women is very intelligent. She was just "in the way" for the MSM so they had all hands on deck to smear her and to make the american people fear her. To someone with a daughter that thinks the sky is the limit for my little angel, this just makes me want to puke!

It's almost to the point where, why would anyone want to run for office. If I was some young upstart watching what went on this year well I may rethink my future. Just terrible.
