Default Smith exploring surgery option

Smith exploring surgery option
By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Steelers left tackle Marvel Smith is considering undergoing season-ending back surgery, agent Ken Zuckerman said Tuesday.

"He's going to do whatever it takes to (continue) his career. Surgery is an avenue we're exploring," Zuckerman said. "Is surgery the best option? Whatever's in the best interest of keeping him healthy to play football."

Smith, 30, has missed five consecutive starts and hasn't practiced in several weeks.

Asked yesterday about Smith's status, coach Mike Tomlin replied, "Marvel's still status quo."

Tomlin said he didn't know if the 6-foot-5, 321-pounder would have surgery.

Smith had successful back surgery in December to relieve a nerve problem that caused him to lose feeling in his lower right leg at times last season. Smith missed five games, including the playoffs, in 2007-08.

Smith said his new injury is unrelated to the old one.

"Last year, what I had to deal with was corrected. It's fine," Smith said. "I don't have any problems with that at all. It's just something I've got to deal with and get through."

Smith said he may have played too long with the injury last season.

"If it's left up to me, I'll always try. Last year, (there) were times I probably shouldn't have tried," said Smith, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. "Now it's just being a little bit smarter about it and coming back when I'm good and not going to have any more setbacks.

"Every week it feels better. (But) it's a difference between feeling better and being ready to play football. I'm just trying to continue to get better each week."

I wish him the best and honestly hope he resumes his career. I know he is a better player than most give him credit for, but probably should think of his health.

Let me be the first to say I was wrong this offseason and was an advocate of extending Smith and releasing Starks. If that was the case we most likely would have seen Trai Essex playing LT or Willie Anderson or some other vet would have been signed

Yeah, this just solidifies my belief that Smith's days as a quality starter are done. At least the silver lining is that it solves our dilemma about how we were going to find the money to re-sign him.

We would be wise to take whatever we were paying him and just use it to bring back Starks (or someone better if we can find them).

We should take that money and sign Harrison to a longer contract before someone else steals him away...

If we can. For all we know, someone will offer him $10 million a year -- probably the Redskins or Cowboys, since they apparently have a permanent exemption from the salary cap -- and there'll be nothing we can do about it anyway unless he sticks with us out of the goodness of his heart.

It'd be nice if we can keep him, but I'm a bit wary about handing out big contracts to players around their 30th birthday. Too often, they've just put up MVP-type numbers and get a fat contract based on that, only to have their play fall off dramatically afterward.

Makes sense in a way -- at a lot of positions, when you're 28-29-30 years old, you'll be at the very top of your game because you've had a few years of NFL experience but age hasn't started to catch up with you yet. But then it's all downhill from there. A few players hold up better than most and don't have a drop-off for a few years, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.
