Default Sunday might find Steelers in playoffs

Sunday might find Steelers in playoffs
By Scott Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Several things need to happen, but the Steelers (9-3) could clinch a playoff berth Sunday. They would be assured a spot in the playoffs with a win over the Dallas Cowboys and losses by the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. They also would punch their ticket to the postseason with a win over the Cowboys and losses by the Patriots and New York Jets as well as a tie by the Dolphins. The Steelers are a game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens (8-4) in the AFC North and have the inside track to the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs. "We play the Dallas Cowboys this week, and our focus is to beat those guys if we can," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "We have no other way of looking at it really. I don't understanding the 'positioning' mentality; I don't."

Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden is expected to return to the starting lineup Sunday after missing six weeks with a broken forearm. "He was pretty close last week, and I think he's going to get over the top this week," Tomlin said." The Steelers will be without two starters -- defensive end Brett Keisel (knee) and left tackle Marvel Smith (back) -- against the Dallas Cowboys.

Steelers running back Willie Parker and defensive end Travis Kirschke will be held out of practice or monitored closely during drills today. Kirschke is dealing with back spasms -- he still is expected to start Sunday at right defensive end for Keisel -- and Parker is having minor knee problems. "It's not an issue, and it's probably not 100 percent, either," Tomlin said of Parker's left knee. "That's December football." Kirschke, Tomlin said, is the only player who sustained an injury of note in the Steelers' 33-10 win over New England last Sunday.

Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison is a finalist for GMC Defensive Player of the Week, while Tomlin is up for Motorola Coach of the Week honors. Both awards will be decided by a fan vote conducted on NFL.com.

Digits

1 -- Steelers' NFL rank in defending kickoff returns (19.3 yards per return).

3 -- 100-yard rushers the Steelers have allowed in their past 78 games.

As far as I see it, the only way we can clinch is just to keep winning. I doubt the Patriots willl lose against the chickenbawks. Were still in a tight race and what would really clinch our division and a 2nd seed is to win out against the ravens and brownies, and maybe get a shot for the 1st seed with a win against the titans.

I have a better playoff berth scenario - WIN the rest of the games!

The only thing that needs to happen right now is win on Sunday. Also very good news about getting McFadden back. I also love the idea of FWP and Moore continuing to share carries. That can only help our offense.

Yep-even though our game is non-conference, it's still nonetheless a crucial one for both of us.

We're on the outside looking in for a WC, and you guys are fighting for the AFCN/bye seed.
