Default Steelers' WR one tough customer

Steelers' WR one tough customer
By Scott Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, December 8, 2008

Nate Washington caught four passes for 58 yards, and his 16-yard reception late in the fourth quarter set up the Steelers' only offensive touchdown in their 20-13 win over the Cowboys.

His most impressive feat Sunday may have been simply getting off the turf at Heinz Field and jogging to the Steelers' sideline after his final -- and most important -- catch of the game. Washington's ankle buckled as he got tackled, and it initially looked like he had sustained a significant injury.

"I don't know how Nate got up from that deal," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said.

Washington, who caught three passes for 41 yards on the Steelers' game-tying touchdown drive in the fourth quarter, stayed down briefly after hurting his ankle. He said he did not seriously injure his ankle and doesn't expect it to be an issue.

"I just thank the grace of God that it wasn't major," Washington said.

Tomlin said the Steelers sustained no significant injuries in yesterday's game.

Outside linebacker James Harrison tied a Steelers record when he recorded his 15th sack of the season. Harrison and Mike Merriweather own the Steelers' single-season sack record. The mark that had stood since 1984 is almost sure to fall if Harrison stays healthy because there are still three games left in the regular season. Harrison, who had eight tackles and a forced fumble in addition to the sack, shrugged off what he had accomplished in the Steelers' 20-13 win.

"You don't look back right now," Harrison said. "The season's still going."

William Gay started at right cornerback and Deshea Townsend opened as the Steelers' nickel back against Dallas, despite the return of Bryant McFadden. McFadden hadn't played since breaking his right forearem Oct. 19 against the Bengals. The four-year veteran had been starting and playing at a high level before getting hurt.

The Steelers were missing a pair of starters, as expected, in defensive end Brett Keisel (knee) and left tackle Marvel Smith (back). Travis Kirschke started for Keisel, while Max Starks played in place of Smith. Joining Keisel and Smith on the Steelers' inactive list were cornerback Fernando Bryant, defensive end Orpheus Roye, outside linebacker Bruce Davis, defensive tackle Scott Paxson, offensive tackle Tony Hills and quarterback Dennis Dixon.

A hyperextended left knee did not stop Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware from playing. Ware, who entered the game with an NFL-high 15 sacks, played with a brace on his injured knee. The Cowboys were without Pro Bowl running back Marion Barber, who did not make the trip because of an injured toe on his right foot. Rookie Tashard Choice started in place of Barber. Rookie cornerback Mike Jenkins (hamstring) and wide receiver Miles Austin (knee) also didn't play for Dallas because of injuries. The Cowboys other inactives were safety Courtney Brown, linebacker Steve Octavien, guard Joe Berger, offensive tackle Doug Free and quarterback Brooks Bollinger.

The Steelers have won 15 of 19 games against NFC teams dating to 2003.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger ralled the Steelers from a fourth-quarter deficit for the 16th time of his career in the regular season.

Digits

19 Percentage of third downs the Steelers converted in 16 attempts Sunday.

28 Combined first downs by the Cowboys and Steelers.

4 Consecutive games in which Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has intercepted a pass, which is a career high.

7 Interceptions Polamalu has this season, which is a career high.

10 Career interceptions Polamalu had prior to this season.

Where are the Nate haters?? I think he played well on sunday. I enjoy watching him play, but he's probably gone after this season.

Gotta agree with you El-Gonzo!

I thought that the injury was a major one, hopefully it was just a quick stinger. I forgot who tackled him, but the defender looked upset with himself when Nate was rolling around on the ground. Was it because the Steelers were driving or maybe becuase he thought Nate was hurt? Either way, great game from Washington!

I hope nate is gone. Sweed has far more upside, better hands, better redzone threat. We already have a burner with Holmes, Possession with Ward, and deep/redzone with Sweed.

next year I invision us drafting a WR/KR specialist so we can finally have a decent return game.

I was actually afraid we'd lost Nate when he went down in blazing twisted-knee glory on that catch at the 5.

Good to see him jump up like new, and give us a time-out.

It was just a scratch. He's much better now.

His little jump up fired me up! Glad he's doing well, and hope we can keep him next year. If not, that's okay as long as we don't face him twice a year.

Washington is the fastest WR we have in the first 20 yards. He will test the free agent market and somebody will pay him to compete for the #2 WR position, while in the Burgh, he will still be behind Ward and Holmes and just competing for the #3 job with Sweed.

Let's hope we can say that next Monday. Those freakin' dirtybirds are going to be out for blood, and another season ending hit.

Nate played a good game yesterday and, don't think he had any drops. I'm glad he stepped out and, made some big plays for us.
