Default Ward's attack plan

Ward's attack plan
By Joe Starkey, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, December 14, 2008

Watch out, man. Be careful when you get on the field. Them boys got somethin' for ya'.

That's the way Hines Ward remembers the phone call, warning him that the Baltimore Ravens were out for blood. It came from Ward's offseason workout partner in Atlanta, then-Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, during the week leading up to a Ravens-Steelers game seven years ago.

In the teams' previous meeting, Ward had bloodied the nose of Ravens safety Rod Woodson with a crushing block.

Woodson was livid. The Ravens threatened revenge.

"To me, that was a bounty, and that was, what, seven years ago?" Ward said this week, as he prepared for the latest installment of the bitter Steelers-Ravens series. "If I wasn't scared then, I'm not going to be scared now."

Lewis, now with the Cleveland Browns, declined through a team spokesman to revisit the situation earlier this week.

Woodson, an analyst for The NFL Network, remembered it well.

"Hines got me with a real good one, made me stumble," Woodson said with a laugh. "The next five plays, I didn't even think about making a tackle. I wanted to get him back."

See, it's not exactly news that Ward is so far into the Ravens' heads they'd need the Jaws of Life to pry him loose.

Lewis apparently wanted to make sure his buddy was prepared for the worst in the rematch, though nothing came of it.

Did the Ravens put a bounty on Ward?

"We never had bounties," Woodson said. "I know (Ravens linebacker Terrell) Suggs came out and said something like that about their team this season, but I hope he was joking. I'll say this, though: When you bleed with a person, become their brother, and somebody takes a shot, you remember it and want to get the guy back. That's called redemption.

"You won't go outside the game plan or the rules, but if you get a good, clean shot, you'll take it."

That is why Ward plans to show up today with an attack mentality -- you know, get them before they get him.

That's his mindset every game.

"I'm not going to wait around to be hit," Ward said. "I'm going to continue to go aggressively after guys."

Ward is more concerned about finding his way back into the offense after making just one catch for 2 yards against Dallas, his least productive day as a starter.

Not that he was going to complain.

"I'm not a T.O.," Ward said, referring to Terrell Owens. "I just want to win."

Ward figures "my day's coming" to be on the receiving end of a seismic hit. Maybe even today.

"If they put a good hit on me, that's one shot," he said. "I'm still up, 3-1."

The three hits Ward puts in his personal win column likely are the one on Woodson and the hellacious shots to safety Ed Reed and linebacker Bart Scott at Heinz Field last season.

Scott threatened on the field to "kill" Ward and later vowed to "find him and make sure I take the most violent shot I can take" the next time they met.

That hasn't happened yet. In fact, Ward struck again in the first meeting this season, flattening Reed. Ward later turned the game in the Steelers' favor when he delivered a big hit along the sidelines and drew a personal foul from incensed Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson.

Woodson can relate, obviously, to how defensive players lose their minds against Ward.

"Most defenders don't like to be hit," Woodson said. "That's why they play defense. Hines can change a game with a hit like that. I'd compare him, at his position, to the way Ronnie Lott was as a safety."

Nothing will come easy today against a revved-up Ravens defense that will sometimes seem as if it has 15 players on the field.

But you know what? If the Ravens did have 15 players out there, and if all 15 decided to go after Ward, that would be fine by him.

He just wants to win.

I just love Ward the way he approaches games and his mindset he definetly knows how to get in the minds of the Ravens they may be so focused on him that Holmes and Washington could have a good game today.

That pretty well sums it up.

Completely agree.

Atta boy Hines! Get 'em before they get you. How can any Steelers fan not just love this guy?

Hines does his talking on the field and I'm sure he's going to be having lots of "chats" with that dikhead Scott and Ed Reed (who I respect tremendously).

I just hope he knocks out Suggs. Suggs is an idiot.

He keeps his head on a swivel.

Did anyone see the shot he took at Scott, he just missed laying him out. They were jawing with each other after the play.
