PITTSBURGH — The Steelers say Ben Roethlisberger will play in a Jan. 11 playoff game. What they don’t know is how effective he’ll be.

When any player sustains a concussion as Roethlisberger did Sunday, it’s impossible to predict how he’ll bounce back from it.

Remember Roethlisberger’s performance on Oct. 29, 2006 in Oakland?

One week after he suffered a concussion in Atlanta, Roethlisberger experienced what arguably is the worst performance of his pro career. In a 20-13 loss to a Raiders team would finish 2-14, Roethlisberger threw four interceptions. Two of those picks were returned for touchdowns.

Was his miserable performance a coincidence? Or was it related to his concussion?

After his most recent concussion, Roethlisberger will have more time to recover. In 2006, he played one week after getting drilled by a Falcons’ pass rusher. This time, he has two weeks to bounce back from the hit he took Sunday against Cleveland.

But Roethlisberger hasn’t exactly been playing up to his lofty standards in recent weeks.

In the 31-14 loss in Tennessee two weeks ago, he passed for 331 yards and two TDs. But he also threw two interceptions and lost two of his four fumbles.

In Sunday’s 31-0 romp over the Browns, Roethlisberger threw an interception and posted a 58.6 passer rating. It was a mediocre effort at best.

His performance has been pedestrian lately, the worst since a three-game rut in mid-season when he combined for only one TD and eight interceptions against the Giants, Redskins and Colts.

After Roethlisberger rallied the Steelers past the Ravens on Dec. 14, I wrote that he should have been one of the three AFC quarterbacks named to the Pro Bowl team. The thought behind that opinion was Roethlisberger’s most impressive trait: an ability to will his team to victory. In his five years as a pro, he’s won 51 of his starts. No one else in NFL history has won so often so fast.

But will he be able to will the Steelers to victory on Jan. 11 in his first game back from a scary concussion?

Will he be able to shake off that frightening moment Sunday when he had to be taken off the field on a spine board? Or will he still have a few cobwebs in his head?

Therein lies the key to the Steelers’ Super Bowl hopes.

Wild horses won't be able to keep Ben from this game. Hopefully Tomlin will be able to pull him if he starts to play like he did in Oakland in '06 ( I was there sadly).
And hopefully the o-line will get it together and play like an NFL type and not a pop warner type o-line.

He's ready, Steelers fans. His ordeal over, his return will be complete come Saturday in Arizona, when football again becomes the focus and a career briefly interrupted resumes.

Thank Goodness for the first round bye. Two weeks will have him back on his feet and I am betting the O line steps it up for the playoffs. Just no more Willie Colon holds!!!!!

Wasn't that Oakland game the 8-8 year after Ben attempted to pull an evil kenival and face planted a windshield?

I'm sure he had more wrong with him than a concussion from the Atlanta game.

Honestly...that entire year was a blur for most of us.

If he plays half as well as Troy plays after a concussion we'll be just fine.

Pretty much everything went wrong that year. The whole team was in some kind of funk. This year, we're not.

Maybe this concussion will bring him back to his true senses and he'll be like Superman again - in spite of the offensive line!

Ben played the very next week, flying cross-country at that.

This time he has two weeks off, no travel other than home to the trainign facility.

And if he plays bad, he'll get pulled.
