Cowher has turned down opportunities to speak to the Browns and now the Jets. The sticking point with the Jets apparently was Cowher wanted to bring along his own player personnel man. Most assume this is Schottenheimer. But I'm wondering if that man is Kevin Colbert. Colbert and Cowher had a good relationship here where Cowher had final say on players but not 100% responsibility. I don't see Schottenheimer as that guy. Of course I could be wrong.

Colbert is signed till 2010.
Why should we let him out of his contract? |

I think Colbert will be staying beyond 2010 as well. So it will make it harder for someone to get him.

Cowher will wait till next year - then take Colbert with him - you watch.
Sources: Cowher wants total control By John Clayton ESPN.com Cowher plans to speak publicly for the first time about the Jets' opening and other coaching opportunities during CBS' wild-card pregame show on Sunday, a source told 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand Updated: December 30, 2008, 11:04 AM ET Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who rejected a chance to become head coach of the Browns last weekend, is not going to interview for the head coaching position of the New York Jets, according to multiple sources. Cowher, according to a source, has been contacted by the Jets. Although he is interested in the Jets job, he told the team he would not be a candidate because he would like to bring in his own personnel director. Jets owner Woody Johnson plans to keep Mike Tannenbaum as his general manager after firing Eric Mangini as head coach Monday. With Tannenbaum as the general manager, Cowher is willing to pass on the Jets opportunity, stay in broadcasting for another year and wait to return to coaching in 2010. Cowher has told friends the Jets job interested him for several reasons. First, Cowher would love to coach in the New York market. Second, two of his daughters are either going to school or working in the New York-New Jersey area. Cowher does plan to coach in 2010. In 2009, though, he was only willing to return if every situation was right for him. He wanted to have a two-year break from coaching to be with family and recharge. Last weekend, Cowher met with Browns owner Randy Lerner, who asked him what it would take financially for him to be the Browns head coach. Having a close relationship with the Rooney family in Pittsburgh and still wanting more time with the family, Cowher didn't give Lerner a price, and said no. Cowher recently extended his contract with CBS for another season. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3799959 |

Cowher does want to take Colbert with him...at least thats been the rumor. if cowher demands to bring in his own GM i am sure he has spoken to said person about taking this job. so one can easily believe the cowher and colbert have already agreed to work together in the future.

Bill is such a tease
"Source: Jets still pursuing Cowher" BY ERIK BOLAND 12:31 PM EST, December 30, 2008 Reports that Bill Cowher isn't interested in the Jets as they're currently structured might not be entirely accurate. ESPN reported earlier today that Cowher would not interview with the Jets, but a source inside the organization with knowledge of the team's plans disputed parts of the report and said that Cowher is "receptive" to discussions. "We plan to speak with him," the source said. "But there have been no discussion yet. We have gotten no indication from him that he would not take the position based on the front office power structure." That structure was brought up during yesterday's news conference announcing the firing of Eric Mangini when Jets owner Woody Johnson said he wouldn't hire a coach who also wanted control over personnel. Any coach wanting control in that area, naturally, would be a threat to GM Mike Tannenbaum. "It's too much," Johnson said. "There's no way, no way that you can do it, in my opinion, and really do it because you're always relying on somebody else. You may think you have the power, but you can't make those discerning decisions, there's just too much work, and be a coach." But the Jets source today said Tannenbaum, also an executive vice president, might be willing to relinquish some responsibilities. "Mike has taken the position that he will do whatever is in the best interest of the franchise," the source said. None of this, of course, means Cowher is slated to be the next coach of the Jets and just how interested the former Steelers coach is hasn't yet been determined. Also yesterday the team asked for permission to speak with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and that permission was granted by the Giants. Longtime NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer is on the team's list of candidates as is Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz." Feel free to discuss among yourselves. It is, as the saying goes, "a fluid situation." http://forums.theganggreen.com/showt...t=40709&page=5 |
