Where Sunday’s contenders stand for 2009 cap
http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/01/11/a-lo...9-free-agency/

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Adam Schefter, New York Giants, San Diego Chargers

Pennsylvania’s NFL teams -– the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles -– are two of the league’s top-run organizations. Both teams have positioned themselves incredibly well for the 2009 season in relation to the salary cap.

Here’s a look at the teams in Sunday’s games and where they stand for next season.

* Pittsburgh – Like their in-state neighbors, the Steelers are $20 million under next season’s salary cap with no significant contract issues. Pittsburgh will want to upgrade its offensive line if it can, but there’s no free agent on its team it can’t afford to lose.

* New York Giants – Though the Giants have $10 million worth of salary-cap space for 2009, both of their top running backs, Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward, are unsigned for next season. Plus, quarterback Eli Manning is headed into the last year of his contract and is in line for one of the richest contracts in NFL history.

* Philadelphia – The Eagles are scheduled to be $25 million under the 2009 salary cap, without any significant contract issues. This will free them to be one of the most aggressive teams in the league and maybe make that run at a big-name player.

* San Diego – With one of the more intriguing situations in the league, the Chargers are scheduled to be $15 million under the salary cap, with RB Darren Sproles as an unrestricted free agent. What’s key for San Diego is that QB Philip Rivers, LB Shawne Merriman and WR Vincent Jackson all will be heading into the last year of their contracts.

I was pretty happy myself when I read it. I thought we were in a lot worse shape.

That is awesome being 20M under the cap next season. But I know we do have quite a few FAs to sign on our team if we want to keep them like McFadden, Washington and others. Next season though money can't be an excuse on not going out and upgrading our OL.

Agreed. I thought we were right up against the cap as well. Good news.

Indeed good news. Can offer McFadden a fair, but generous offer and keep the DB core intact.

Can consider pursuing Chris Canty as a young 3-4 DE in free agency and a mid level OT. I still wanna focus on drafting O linemen as I dont think the Steelers will spend big on a guy like Jordan Gross.

I agree. And actually I would love to see the Steelers go after Jason Brown from the Rats. He could really help our interior OL.

Well that is very good news. I would like to see the Steelers bring in some offensive lineman through free agency but I don't want to pay a king's ransom to do so. I would think resigning Bryant McFadden would be high on the list but again only at a fair contract like El-Gonzo said. But the bottom line is the Steelers do have some room to resign some of their people or add free agents.

I would think resigning Nate Washington would be high on the list as well. There isn't much depth in our WR core. I still have high hope for Limas Sweed but he is it for depth really.
