Default Legursky hopes to get two rings this winter

Legursky hopes to get two rings this winter
By Gary Fauber

The rest of the winter figures to be busy for Doug Legursky. He and fiancee, Megan, have plenty of planning to do for their March wedding.

Then there’s the Super Bowl.

Oh, yeah. The Super Bowl.

Legursky, a Beckley native and former Marshall center, hasn’t played a down this season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But, as a member of the AFC champions’ practice squad, his job has been to get the NFL’s top-rated defense ready for the last 18 weeks.

Legursky and the rest of the group did something right in preparing James Harrison and Co. for their third game of the season against the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers allowed just 25 yards rushing and made quarterback Joe Flacco finally look like a rookie with three interceptions in Sunday’s 23-14 AFC clincher.

Legursky watched the game from the stands with Megan and a couple of their friends.

“We froze our butts off,” Legursky said, “but that’s OK.”

The Steelers will make their second Super Bowl appearance in four seasons against the Arizona Cardinals Feb. 1 in Tampa. This time, Legursky will be along for the ride.

And what a wild ride it has been for the 2004 Woodrow Wilson graduate.

“It has been crazy,” Legursky said in a phone conversation Monday night. “My first year in the league. I’m on the practice squad, but the players make me feel like an important part of the team. I feel like I contribute something to each win.”

And he will continue to contribute for the next two weeks. The team will practice in Pittsburgh this week before flying to Tampa next Monday for Super Bowl XLIII.

Legursky won’t actually be playing in the game, but he will still play a role in Pittsburgh trying to repeat its win of Super Bowl XL. That win came against the Seattle Seahawks — like Arizona this year, the NFC West champions.

“So many people would love to go to the Super Bowl,” Legursky said. “It’s great. Not just being on the team, but the atmosphere of the whole city is amazing.”

This time a year ago, Legursky was working out in hopes of getting selected in the NFL draft. He wasn’t taken in the event’s seven rounds, but he agreed to a free agent deal with the Steelers hours after the draft was completed.

He was released twice before agreeing to a deal in August that landed him on the practice squad.

“We do everything the rest of the team does, except play,” Legursky said. “It’s the equivalent of redshirting in college. We practice against the No. 1 defense. I feel like I have helped the defense get ready for the opponent each week.”

Legursky is one of the few who goes against the Steelers’ defense on a regular basis, so he is just as qualified as anyone to anoint that phase of the team as the best in the league.

“You can’t say enough about those guys,” Legursky said. “There is no question they are the best defense in the NFL. And to go against a defense that good just makes me a better player.”

After the Super Bowl, Legursky will be able to fully concentrate on his and Megan’s wedding. The hometown couple — she graduated from Woodrow in 2005 — will be married March 14 in Beckley.

With any luck, that will be Legursky’s second ring in less than two months.

If things pan out the way I think they might....Legursky will be on the sidelines next year as the backup center.

They aint allowed on the sidelines during games. I really hope he continues to develop and with so many free agents on the line this year he could win a spot on the roster next year. Congrats Doug on the wedding.

The guys on the practice squad are truly unsung heroes, as they are the ones who get our starters prepared to do battle. Guys - you do one helluva job and this proud Steelers fan appreciates it more than you know!

Grats to Doug and Megan!

So the guys on the practice squad will get the rings as well?

Another question. Do the guys on injured list, like Mendendall, Batch, or Sepulveda will also get the ring?

Sorry didn't mean to sound arrogant, I just really don't know & want to know.

NO, I believe NFL Rules only allow so many players on the sidelines and it usually doesn't involve the practice squad.
