Default Curse of the Pottsville Maroons!

Being from the Coal Region of this Keystone State, he people around here take a lot of pride in our 1925 NFL Champion Pottsville Maroons! I live about 30 minutes away from where they used to play all those years ago. Our high schools have been Coal Region rivals for many years.

They had their title stripped due to politics raised with the NFL heads and the owner of the Frankford Yellow Jackets, their main rival. After being crowned champions, they played an exhibition game against the Four Horsemen and the Notre Dame All Stars which was held within the *territory* of the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets owner conspired with Commissioner Joe Carr to have the title stripped. The 1925 NFL championship was awarded to the the Chicago Cardinals who refused to claim it.

After being purchased by the Bidwell family, the Cardinals franchise then began to take credit for the 1925 title. There has been an alleged curse on the franchise because of this, which has led to their EXTREMELY limited success in the years since.

One of the few persons to openly speak out in the past for the reinstatement of the 1925 title to Pottsville has been our own late Arthur J. Rooney. Anyone else find it fitting that not only a PA team (well, THE PA team) is fighting for the honor of the Pottsville Maroons, but specifically one of the few to openly support their right to the title?

HERE WE GO STEELERS!!!!!! The Maroons will be watching from above! I for one will be wearing my Maroons T-Shirt under my jersey for Super Bowl Sunday!

I live in the Wyoming Valley and also agree that they should be given that Championship! That's bull!

Hey guys, this Pottsville Maroon Curse is bigger than you think. I'm surprised there's not more talk of it here. There's many threads about it on the Cardinals forums, especially the week prior to the Eagles game (as Philly was much closer to Pottsville). David Fleming on ESPN has done a couple pieces on it, and I think is working on a book. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...2&sportCat=nfl

Three important notes for Steeler fans on this:

#1) Most consider the curse to have begun in the 60's, when Charles Bidwell refused to share the championship.

#2) The Rooney family has been the only NFL owners to consistently support the town of Pottsville.

#3) Pottsville, PA is the home of Yuengling! It gives you yet another excuse to drink up during the game!

So remember to put down a sixpack of Yuengling this sunday in support of Pottsville and the Steelers!

The funny thing is that I moved away from Pittsburgh before Yuengling was really distributed there. Right before the playoffs, I broke out my Hines jersey, and Terrible Towels. I was going to order some Iron City, but a friend from Pittsburgh told me about Yuengling, so I got some Yuengling Porter instead. After we won, I figured it would be my regular playoff routine. That was before I ever heard about the Pottsville curse!

This is a good read:

and another reason it is so important to listen to the stories of our older citizens. This guy is a vast fountain of experience and old-cootiness.

I also knew about this, and I'm surprised about no one bringing it up, as a matter of fact I was going to bring that up. I know that the Rooneys are extreme supporters of the Pottsville Maroons and they refuse to recognize the Cardinals as the Champions. If Im correct they decided to bring that issue back up in 2005 and the Rooneys and I think the Eagles voted for the re evaluation but they lost the vote.

It would definitely be a good thing for us to beat them for the true '25 champs.

Uhmmmm, I don't think that was a real interview.

One clue might be the fact that it was in the humor section.

A hard drinking 109 year old? Aw, come on. Sounds real to me.

The sentiment is certainly real.
