Default FOX News Poll: More Americans Rooting for Steelers

FOX News Poll: More Americans Rooting for Steelers
Friday , January 30, 2009
By Matt London

For the 43rd time, it's Super Sunday Ö Super Bowl XLIII will be played this weekend, Feb. 1, and slightly more Americans say they will be cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Arizona Cardinals. Possibly more disconcerting for the Cardinals may be this: just over half of Americans say the Steelers will walk away with the Super Bowl trophy.

More bad news for Cardinals fans: even President Obama says he is a longtime Steelers fan.

The latest FOX News/Opinion Dynamics poll finds that 38 percent of Americans say they will cheer for the Steelers and 31 percent will be pulling for the Cardinals. Almost one-quarter of Americans (24 percent) either say they donít follow football or that the outcome doesnít matter to them.

By a wide 30-percent margin, more Americans believe the Steelers will win (51 percent) than think the Cardinals will (21 percent). Twenty-eight percent say they either donít know or donít care.

Predictably, the strongest fan support for the Steelers comes from the Northeast, where 53 percent are rooting for Pittsburgh. Support for Arizona is highest in the West, where 37 percent are pulling for the Cardinals. Midwesterners are split down the middle Ė 35 percent for each team.

How about the new era of bipartisanship? Is it rubbing off a little in the world of sports? Apparently not. Democrats are much more likely to support the Steelers (40 percent to 25 percent) than either Republicans or independents. Republicans are more likely to be Cardinals fans by a 3-percent margin. Independents are split: 37 percent for Pittsburgh and 35 percent for Arizona.

Opinion Dynamics Corp. conducted the national telephone poll of 900 registered voters for FOX News from January 27 to January 28. The poll has a 3-point error margin.
