Default "1-2-3.... We're cool!" - Tomlin's edge

all this talk about the edge the cardinals coaches will have going against their former team....

what a difference in the 2 coaches demeanors this week with the press. i really like whiz but he's seemed a little rigid and stiff in his press conferences and interviews.

tomlin has been cool, calm, collected, and laid back as always.

tomlin has barely mentioned dungy, or gruden, or any of thiose who have molded him. ken has spent plenty of time talking about cowher and his experience with the steelers.

tomlin is clearly his own man. ken almost seems happy to be a steeler/cowher clone.

tomlin has shown he will be aggressive, whether it comes to dealing with the media, or calling plays in a game.

whiz has shown he will turtle shell it in the champ game and allow a blown out eagles team to come back. he has shown he will turtle shell the season when they have a playoff spot secured. yet he is applauded for getting his team back in pads after the patriots blow out. who allowed them to get blown out in the 1st place? whiz is showing me he is very capable of falling short.

if we see 22 tolmin clones on the field today vs. 22 whisenhunt clones, my money is on the tomlins any day.

i still cant get over how much whiz seems like the 1st year, young rookie and tomlin comes off as the seasoned "been there, done that" vet.

excellant points! It would seem that the cards/whiz are just happy to be here and the steelers/tomiln are here to play football IMHO!

Just curious-back in the offseason, what was the level of your optimism with this team?

It wasn't just all these media rags being in the Dallas/San Diego jockstrap, but pretty much all of them were hyping the Browns to at least make it to the AFCCG as well. On the contrary, these same rags thought Pittsburgh had alot of question marks.(for some reason, I'll admit I did too, although at the same time, I myself had question marks over my Dallas team)

I wasnt sure what to expect after the Jags did us in twice at home last year. But knowing we have a championship calliber QB, that is a proven winner, I was very optimistic. I didnt know our defense would prove to be the very best in the league and maybe the history of the NFL, but then again who thought the Titans would be 10 or 11 and 0 like they were. Once we got past the Sallad (sorry I mean Dallas) game with a W (considering how bad we played most of the game) and the fact that 2 of our 3 losses at the time were games that we coulda, shoulda won (those would be the Colts and Giants, we just got embarrassed against the Eagles) I figured we had a very good chance to make it. I was never scared of the Titans even after they beat us silly. We were coming off a 5 game winning streak and had just secured the division the week before against what I believe was the second best team in the NFL this season. We were due and needed to lose in my opinion.

Anyway GO STEELERS, STARTING ON THE OTHER HAND..

The big flaw with the national sports media is that they look at PAST PERFORMANCE when they make their predictions, for the most part. Remember prior to the '07 season, everyone said how the Saints and Eagles were the teams to beat in the NFC? Of course, the pundits kept grossly overlooking the Saints' and Eagles' weak LB corps(among other things). Sure-they played great the year before with what they had, but you can only go on for so long with those glaring holes.

As for our 12/7 game, to be frank, we played pretty poorly as well-and our softness was exposed in a big way. The difference b/w both of our teams that day was that the Steelers made the critical plays at the end to win it, while we self destructed...ultimately, that's what counts the most in winning/losing.

I agree, I think you hit the nail on the head with everything you stated here.
And especially our game.

luckily for us we did make the plays at the end. Everyone blames it on Romo and I dont know what Romo did to cause the game to be tied in the first place.

For my own part, I was pretty merciless about telling people they shouldn't believe the hype, our schedule wasn't the impossibility the media was making it out to be, and we'd do fine. There were literally people predicting 7-9 or 8-8 records just based on the horseshit strength of schedule from last year's records. I was a complete asshole to some people who wrote this team off because they thought "OMG we hav 2 play the colts & the patriots, LLLLL, the sky is falling!"

I honestly thought the offensive line and the running game would be better than they were, so that was disappointing, but whatever. They got us here in one piece.

I will admit I was a little nervous about the hiring of Mike Tomlin, but as Tony the Tiger would say, "he's Grrrrrrrrrrrreaaaaaaatttttttttttt!!! He is exactly what the Steelers needed after Cowher. An independant personality. He doesnt rely on old coaching syles, he is who he is and that's it. I love it, he has brought a little swagger to this team. They believe everytime they step on the field that they can win, and nobody will out compete them on the field.

I was optimistic, but with the schedule I thought that we might be 9-7 or 10-6, win the division and with the right matchups possible an AFC Championship Game. I didnt expect a SB. I thought alot depended on the O-Line since we took a big hit there.

With that tough schedule and the way we played at home against Jax in the last 2 games of the season, I was really skeptical about this year but, wow even without a running game to speak of this year, it is just like the Super Bowl XL feeling, that time came from nowhere to win it all and this team well doit too!!! Go Steelers!!!
