No rest for Steelers as next season looms

http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp...8khXoVK0qY4jaQ

TAMPA, Florida (AFP) Mike Tomlin gets to relax for a while after coaching the Pittsburgh Steelers to victory in Super Bowl 43. Now it's time for Omar Khan to start assembling the talent that will defend the throne.

Khan, whose father is from India and mother is from Honduras, is the chief player contract negotiator for the Steelers. He is the master of keeping the Steelers strong yet within the National Football League salary cap limits.

"The moment the Super Bowl is over, it's back to business," Khan said. "We map it out and I execute it. Every day is an adventure."

Khan is the dealmaker. With Tomlin's task complete and a record sixth Super Bowl trophy in hand for Pittsburgh, it will be Khan working with player agents and judging how much can be spent on keeping talent or adding new players.

"You really have to build a relationship with those guys. There is a trust factor," Khan said. "You want the player feeling good. That's always a factor when you're doing contracts."

Khan began his football-business coordinator career as an intern with the gridiron team at Tulane University, the New Orleans college where his parents met as students.

Khan spent four seasons with the NFL's New Orleans Saints and has spent seven years with the Steelers, his father's favorite team even before his son worked for them.

"I have a great job. It's not complicated," he said. "I feel like the luckiest person on the face of the Earth. I can't wait to get to work. I love walking past those championship trophies."

It's a longer walk thanks in part to Tomlin, who is glad to hand off the money matters and April's NFL Draft preparation work to folks like Khan and Kevin Colbert, the team's director of football operations.

"Kevin Colbert is already starting preparations for free agency and the draft. That's the cycle that makes this game so great," Tomlin said.

half-time "I'm going to take some time with the kids, hang out for a while. I will quickly fall in with our personnel people with getting ready for the draft."

Many want to compare the current Steeler squad - with two titles in four seasons - to the Steelers' four-time champions of the 1970s, but Tomlin rejects the idea, considering each lineup and season unique.

"Comparing us to the Steel Curtain, that's not the reality of the NFL at this time," Tomlin said.

"You will not here me use words like repeat or defending. This group will always be special to me but some time soon this group will take it's place in history. That's what it will be - history."

The reality is that other teams will try to sign away top talent among players and assistant coaches based upon the Steelers' Super Bowl triumph.

"Games like this create opportunities for people," Tomlin said. "I like our staff because we work well together. It's a very humble and unselfish group."

Keeping it together with money is Khan's job. Keeping it together physically and mentally is Tomlin's task and he is already working on heaping pressure on the shoulders of his players for training camps six months from now.

"Our players must allow their bodies to recover. They have worked their bodies a month longer than their competitors," Tomlin said.

"We're a month behind for '09."

So we all know that if the personnel isn't right in 2009-2010, then it's not the coaches fault but Khans!

I just snorted...I highly doubt the Steelers go after a guy that made a point of saying he wanted a new contract and was "disgruntled" on his previous team. That isn't good mojo.

Actually, I was thinking of packaging those picks and moving up for a starting OT, but that's not a very sexy move.

Love the article and thanks for posting it. There is alot of work that us fans of any team doesnt know about and I want to thank Mr Kahn for doing the job that he does along with Mr. Colbert, they are truly some of the if not the Best In The Business.

I am totally ready for the week of Sept.6 on that early thursday night game that the Steelers will be representing the NFL's best in the opening game of the '09 season.
