Phoenix mayor apologizes for Steelers towel joke

The Arizona Cardinals may have lost the Super Bowl on Sunday, but they won respect of fans and critics alike.

"They won our hearts and their champions and we're going to show them," said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon.

As the heartbroken team prepares to return home following a exhilarating, come-from-behind loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII, proud fans are expected to greet the team with open arms.

"What an exciting, exciting come back the best in the history of the Super Bowl," said Gordon. He's calling on fans across the Valley to welcome home the team as winners. "They really are champions."

When ABC15 asked Mayor Gordon about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties the Steelers racked up against the Cardinals Sunday, he expressed disappointment about how Cardinals fans were picked on in Tampa. "The city, the state, the fans are all class."

The mayor went on to apologize for his own indiscretion last week at a send off rally at Sky Harbor International Airport. Mayor Gordon held up a Steelers "Terrible Towel" then pretended to blow his nose on it, and threw it on the ground.

"Even the little humor we had with the towel I sent an apology to Pittsburgh it wasn't intended," replied Gordon.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and members of the Glendale City Council will host a Cardinals Homecoming rally Monday at Sky Harbor Airport from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"You can't turn back history but we're going to forward," said Gordon.
