Default Steelers' Larry Foote wants to play for Lions

Friend: Steelers' Larry Foote wants to play for Lions

January 29, 2009

TAMPA — Could linebacker Larry Foote leave the Pittsburgh Steelers for his hometown Lions?

“He wants to come back here,” said Brian Blackburn, a friend of Foote’s. “This is the last year of his contract, and he wants to come back here and play for the Lions for about four years and call it quits after that.”

When Foote was a student at Detroit Pershing, Blackburn was the offensive and defensive line coach and ran the weight room. They still lift together occasionally in the off-season and keep in touch throughout the year.

Blackburn said Foote told him of his future plans the last time they spoke. Told it is hard to believe that any NFL player, especially one playing in the Super Bowl, wants to play for the Lions, Blackburn laughed.

“He does,” Blackburn said. “He’ll take it. He wants to get something set up in the Detroit area for inner-city kids. He’s got as real desire to work with kids. As a matter of fact, I tried to get him to come to my son’s school at Warren Cousino and speak to the kids, and he said, ‘I’ve got to go in the city first and speak to them.’”

Foote also told Blackburn that he wants coach, but not at the college or pro level. Foote played in college at Michigan.

“He wants to coach Pershing,’’ Blackburn said.

Foote was not asked about the Lions today. But asked whether this could be his last season with the Steelers, even though he is signed for 2009, he said: “It could possibly be that way. We’re running out of room here on this team. Hopefully, we’ll see what happens in the off-season.”

For two years, Foote has held off first-round pick Lawrence Timmons for a starting job.

“But he’s showing what he can do,” Foote said. “He’s definitely the future of this team. We’ll just see what happens.”

This is the article that I was talking about....in regards to possibly picking up some draft picks from Detroit.

Thanks for the link. I was wondering where that Lions talk was coming from.

There is an article out there about him paying for a young kids funeral in Detroit last year. Foote had no idea who the kid was, just touched by the tragedy.

I can't blame the guy for wanting to wrap up his career at home where he'll probably live when he finishes up. I just didn't want the Rooneys shipping him off there for a pick.

It could very well be that Larry understands the situation he is in with Timmons coming on strong behind him. Its the typical Steeler Linebacker deal. A guy is always ready to take your job.

Makes sense that he puts out the world that if he is going to be traded, he'd prefer a certain team. The Rooneys may try to make his desire something that happens. We'll see what happens.

I love Larry Foote and what he has brought to the Steelers in the past few years, but if the man wants to go play for his home town team then the Steelers should try to get what they can for him because after this upcoming season they will lose him for nothing in return. I wish Larry the very best in life wherever he ends up.

I think you are right...Larry has no ill feelings towards Pittsburgh... he is a smart guy and:

1) Would rather start for Detroit then play in special packages in Pittsburgh.

2) Knows that a person needs to look for a new contract when his value is at the highest... in order to maximize his payoff potential. (In other words his value is higher now as a starter then it would be next year as a backup).

3) Knows that as a two time Super Bowl champion...he would be treated like a celebrity and his off-field earning potential (through promotions...commercials...etc)would be through the roof in his home-town.

LLT, agree 100%. He'd be a leader and a "legend" In Detroit and would be looked to for guidance and would be seen as having a huge impact if they turn things into a 4 -6 wins season.

In Pittsburgh, he'd turn into a cog in the machine and not be given as much credit as he would with the Lions.

I just dont think he is big enough to play MLB in a 4-3 defense in Detroit. But, I guess you never know.

Any truth that they offered Harrison a contract to be their Long-Snapper?
