Default Local Steeler's mom at a loss for words...

Local Steeler's mom at a loss for words...
BY DAVE LEWIS, Examiner publisher

The Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers may not have had a more enthusiastic fan in Tampa last Sunday night than Evelyn Sweed. Maybe it was because her son, Limas, was on the field as a Steeler.

I can't find the words to explain it, said Limas' mom Tuesday morning recalling her whirlwind weekend in Florida. We ate at the finest restaurants, and you look around and there are stars everywhere,” she said, noting she saw people like Jesse Jackson and former NFL great Eddie George. She even got to visit with Steeler Hines Ward. “He was very nice and gave us words of encouragement,” Evelyn said. Of course, meeting Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin was a special moment as well since family members stayed at the same hotel with the team members.

Limas, in his rookie season out of The University of Texas via Brenham High School, wasn't expected to see much action with the Steelers this season.

He wasn't supposed to play as a rookie, said his mom, but he got in there and showed a lot of talent. They love his blocking, but they're grooming him. There wasn't a need for a receiver when they drafted him so Coach Tomlin is bringing him along slowly. He did exactly what they wanted him to do this year on special teams.

Evelyn said she was impressed by the on-field play of receiver Larry Fitzgerald of Arizona and especially Santonio Holmes, who made the game-winning catch with less than a minute to play in the Steelers' 27-23 comeback win. Holmes was named the Super Bowl XLIII MVP.

I would have liked to have had that cushion, you know,” Evelyn said with a chuckle when asked if she thought the game was a thriller.

As for the pomp leading up to the game and afterward, Evelyn Sweed said she couldn't believe all the food available to the teams and guests.

They gave us the red carpet treatment the whole time,” she said. “There was anything to eat anybody could want. I bet they spent more than $2 million on food and entertainment.

Evelyn Sweed said the Steelers may be thinking about making a repeat run at the Super Bowl next year, but for now, “they're talking about vacations,” said Evelyn.

She said Limas plans to take a week off, but after that, he plans to go right back into training.

Back at her home near Navasota, Evelyn Sweed is still bubbling with excitement after what was perhaps the most entertaining weekend she's ever had.

Nice to see the team taking care of the family of one of their player's. Exactly what I would expect from the Rooney's.

Limas showed a lot after that drop in the AFC Title game. From that hit on Ivy, to the heads up play keeping the guy that was covering him from getting a pick, and making an all hands catch for a 1st down. I think Limas will be a stud. I do not have any doubt.

It is funny how the Rooney's smartest move of the SB was completely overlooked, even by Steelers fans.

Who was there? Limas Sweed's MOTHER? Really? WHy is that?

Who better to keep Limas from big parties and girls with tattoos? Yep... the mother is the best choice to keep a rookie out of trouble.

(girls with tatoos, loved that line)

Speaking of team families - one of my coworkers is a first cousin to Deshea. She said that the families were treated very well, and when her young niece was introduced to Coach T, he took the time to take her aside and speak with her at the Steelers' celebration after the game - asked her about herself, got to know her a little bit. I thought that was a pretty cool, considering they had so much going on. The niece still has stars in her eyes over the Super Bowl

...as for my coworker, I keep telling her to bring Deshea in for Show and Tell but she hasn't yet
