Default Big Ben - surprisingly solid

I argue with a friend weekly about Big Ben. He basically says he sucks. We only win because of our defense and Big Ben does nothing but manage a game.
While he is correct about our defense being great year in and year out and that we usually have a balanced offensive attack ( although no running game for most of this year). Big Ben is more than a manager of a game. He makes plays when plays need to be made. In addtion, I decided to look at some stats since he joined the league.

This is based on passer rating, which takes all aspects of a QB and puts it into one number. While not perfect it does measure the efficiency of a QB pretty well. Using net yards, comp %, TD's, or INT's doesn't make sense. QB rating takes all of these factors into account.
In the last 5 years since his rookie season this is the top 5 each year:
04
1. P. Manning 121.1
2. Culpeper 110.9
3. Brees 104.8
4. McNabb 104.7
5. Ben 98.1

05
1. P. Manning 104.1
2. Palmer 101.1
3. Ben 98.6
4. Hasselback 98.2
5. Bulger 94.4

06
1. P. Manning 101.0
2. Huard 98.0
3. Brees 96.2
4. McNabb 95.5
5. Romo 95.1
21. Ben 75.4

07
1. Brady 117.2
2. Ben 104.1
3. Garrard 102.2
4. P. Manning 98.0
5. Romo 97.4

08
1. Rivers 105.5
2. Pennington 97.4
3. Warner 96.9
4. Brees 96.2
5. P. Manning 95.0
24. Ben 80.1

I knew Payton was great, but not this great. Top 5 all 5 years and #1 three times.
Big Ben and Brees were next, in the top 5 three times.
McNabb and Romo in the top 5 twice.
Nobody else made the list more than once and that includes Tom Brady. (yeah I know Pats fans he was hurt last year, but what happened in the other 3 years. )

Big Ben's detractors no longer have a leg to stand on. Period. End of discussion. All the cries of "22.6," and that "the Steelers' running game and great defense win all of Ben's games for him" went out the window 11 days ago when his defense coughed up a 13-point 4th quarter lead, his running game did nothing (again) and he bailed them all out with an 88-yard SB-winning TD drive. Next.

Ben Roethlisberger won Super Bowl XLIII. Not the running game (which was non-existant all year), or the Defense, or for the idiot conspiracy theorists, the referees.

Ben. All Ben. 100%.

Anyone who has the gall and the nerve to tell me he's not very good. I'm just give them a dirty look, the finger, and walk away. Such stupidity does not deserve a response. And anyone who complains about him (They'll be here next year when the Steelers lose a game). I'll be on them like flies on dog shit. No excuses.

Ben is an Elite quarterback.

Not a good Quarterback.

An ELITE Quarterback.

He didn't "manage" the Superbowl.
He Won it.

Do people still seriously think all this crap? I could understand people's point of view before this years superbowl. But after Ben leads a legendary 88 yard drive to win the superbowl how can anyone think that he is a game manager?

Also, how many QBs in his position are going to go for the win? How many are going to play for overtime? I wouldn't trade Ben for any player in the whole league. He wins games and he wins championships.

No offense to the OP, but really - how many more "Ben Sucks", "My Friend Sez Ben Suuuuuucks" threads are we going to have around here? It's beyond the point of ridiculous anymore.

The guy has 2 Super Bowl rings in 5 seasons. He threw the game-winning TD pass to return the Lombari Trophy to the franchise whose team rightfully earned it. END OF STORY.

BB's breakout season was 2008 and his best game was SB XLIII. Will be interesting to see what happens next year. A collapsing pocket is a double edged sword as long as BB remains relatively healthy. It will be interesting to see who goes deeper in the playoffs next season.

Common sense says we repeat if we remain healthy while the Colts work with a new coach and Brady knocks the rust off. Eagles and Giants look to be the toughtest competition.
