Default Bires: Steelers' DVD is priceless

Bires: Steelers' DVD is priceless
http://www.timesonline.com/articles/...6907038999.txt

By Mike Bires, Times Sports Staff

The Steelers’ Super Bowl season was a one-for-the-ages classic. So is their 2008 highlight film.

I’ve gotten to watch so many of the Steelers’ highlight films over the years, and NFL Films always does a solid job capturing the essence of each season. But this year, in a DVD simply titled “Super Bowl XLIII Champions,” NFL Films exceeds its lofty standards.

With a variety of camera angles, slow-motion techniques and sound bites, NFL Films has produced a compilation of highlights that truly depict what the ’08 Steelers were all about.

The film goes through the entire season, game by game. And although many highlights from those games may never be forgotten, NFL Films shows those moments as we’ve never seen them before. This is footage beyond what we’ve seen on network TV.

I don’t want to go into detail about what’s on “Super Bowl XLIII Champions.” But here are a few things that are particularly fascinating.

l In the AFC Championship Game, Hines Ward agreed to be hooked up for sound.

Early in that game, Ward suffered a sprained knee, and right after his injury as he hobbled to the sidelined, he could be heard saying, “I twisted my knee.”

Ward returned for a few plays but when pain worsened, was forced to miss the rest of the 23-14 win over Baltimore. But right before halftime, Ward provided one of the greatest sound bites in team history. It happened right after rookie wide receiver Limas Sweed dropped what would have been a 50-yard touchdown pass.

I won’t tell you exactly what Ward said in his exchange with Sweed. But it’s priceless.

l Sound bites from Santonio Holmes right before Super Bowl XLIII started and right before the Steelers’ game-winning drive were so prophetic. Holmes kept saying “It’s time to be great.”

He sure was on his tip-toe TD catch that gave the Steelers a 27-23 win.

l No one in the film comes across better than Mike Tomlin.

There’s no denying that his players relate to him. On this highlight film, we get to see and hear why there’s such a connection.

The “Super Bowl XLIII Champions” DVD is available at many stores in western Pennsylvania. It costs $24.98. The DVD also includes eight extra segments profiling Tomlin, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers’ top-ranked defense, to just name a few.

Ward said it best Monday when the DVD premiered at the AMC Loews Waterfront theatre in Homestead: “It’s a collector’s item.”

I've watched the XL DVD a hundred times, at least. I'm sick that I forgot to look for this in stores tonight, meant to do that.

Can't wait!

I was beat tonight..... took my daughter waaay on the other side of Pittsburgh to buy a 75 gallon aquarium for a bearded dragon lizard that she didn't yet have. Getting that loaded up, bought, transported, then moved into the house was a number of tasks.

Then we needed tiles for the floor (so as to avoid loose substrate like sand, which I've learned might cause digestive system impaction.) Off to Lowes I went, in search of either slate or textured tiles. Sadly, I found really expensive ones. Sadder still, they didn't fit well, so I had to take a second trip to Lowes to get them cut by an associate who was none too pleased about having to saw tiles for a reptile's house. I got that done too, though.

Then we needed the pet, once the habitat was set up, which took 4 or 5 phone calls, Google Maps, and another 20 minute drive each way. Ultimately, it was a mission accomplished (and a very happy daughter), but by the time I got back out to Robinson tonight, all I could think about was a steak and a Yuengling. I got both at the Texas Steakhouse (the latter x2) and I forgot ALL about going over to Wally World to see about the DVD. :(

I will do that tomorrow. Anyone know if it's available at Wal-Mart yet?

NFL Films have never been the same since John Facenda died. They've lost something without his narration for me at least.
