Default #1 picks

The Steelers have been extremely successful with landing quality players at #1 the last 5 years. These are picks that have usually been towards the bottom of the round, since they have had winning seasons except for 06 at 8-8. They traded up a couple of times but not inside the top 10.

03-Polamalu. HOF candidate.
04-Roethlisberger. HOF candidate.
05-Heath Miller. Top 5 TE in my opinion.
06-Holmes. This years playoffs stepped up huge every game.
07-Timmons. Showed glimpses of being the next great Steeler LB.
08-Mendenhall. Really don't know yet?

Has any other team in the league done this well since 03 with their top picks?

we've always been good at filling in positions that we need to be filled in and we are the only team to draft 4 hall of famers in one draft. I don't think there is another team that is as consistent with good draft picks as we are.

Interesting post. Look at Detroit Lions:

2002 Joey Harrington (#3 overall)
2003 Charles Rogers (#2 overall)
2004 Roy Williams (#7 overall)
2005 Mike Williams (#10 overall)
2006 Ernie Sims (#9 overall)
2007 Calvin Johnson (#2 overall)

Sims and Johnson have been solid, but drafting that high, they have made some horrible picks.

Another good thread might be all of the undrafted FAs that have excelled.

FWP comes to mind immediately.

I don't think the silverback was drafted was he? that would make two great UFA picks.

Between the salary cap and the way rookie contracts become "slotted", I think there's a whole lot more value with a pick in the bottom 1/4 of the first round than there is with a top ten pick.
