Default Hampton to be honored by hometown

Nose tackle Casey Hampton will be honored by his hometown of Galveston, Texas at a benefit dinner and parade.

Hampton will be honored on March 27 at a dinner at the Pelican Club at Gaido’s Restaurant in Galveston, an event that will raise money for Hurricane Ike relief. Galveston was hit hard by the hurricane.

The following day Hampton will be honored at a parade in Galveston and have his jersey retired at Ball High School.

Wide receiver Nate Washington will not be back next season as the free agent agreed to a deal with the Tennessee Titans. Washington, the Steelers number three receiver, joined the team as a rookie free agent in 2005. He had 40 receptions for 631 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Everyone in the Steelers organization is hoping for a good outcome in the search for two missing NFL players and another boater off of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

One of those missing is Marquis Cooper, who currently plays for the Oakland Raiders but was with the Steelers for a part of 2006 and 2007.

Cooper played for coach Bill Cowher when he was signed in 2006, with the team for about a month. He was re-signed by coach Mike Tomlin in 2007 during training camp, but released in September after an injury. He was re-signed again in December.

"He's a great guy and we hope for the best," said director of football operations Kevin Colbert. "He played for both coaches and he could play either linebacker position."

Running back Mewelde Moore, who signed with the team as a free agent last offseason, thinks the Steelers are successful because of the family approach.

“I think it starts up top,” said Moore. “It starts with all the Rooneys and then from Coach (Mike) Tomlin down through the players. Just the atmosphere and the players, the way everyone loves football , takes care of each other, and does everything together as a team, as a family. Being a family is a big deal and that is definitely what we felt here, being a family.”

Weekend events to honor Ball grad Hampton

GALVESTON — The city of Galveston will be able to celebrate the career of native son Casey Hampton later this month. In return, he’s giving back to the island.

Hampton, a Ball High and University of Texas grad who just won his second Super Bowl as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be honored at a relief benefit dinner March 27 at the Pelican Club at Gaido’s Restaurant. The next day, Hampton will be featured in a parade through Galveston and have his football jersey number retired at Ball High School.

Hampton’s agent, Tyron Collins, said the weekend events are a way for the big defensive tackle to give back to the community he loves.

“Casey loves Galveston,” Collins said. “He grew up here, and his mom still lives here. With the state Galveston is still in, he thought it would be good to get people in the community excited about some things. He also wanted to help in the recovery.”

The March 27 gala, being organized by MVP Sports Logistics, will feature a top-notch speaker list. Among those scheduled to attend are Texas coach Mack Brown, Pittsburgh owner Dan Rooney, Vince Young (former UT quarterback), Jerome Bettis (former Steelers running back) and Hines Ward (Steelers receiver and Super Bowl XL MVP).

“It’s amazing that Galveston could get something like this,” said Jim Reinhard, a member of the Galveston County Texas Exes Network, which is promoting the event. “It shows how much Casey is respected by his peers. They are giving up time to come down here, partly because of who Casey is and partly because they want to help.”

The cost for the 8 p.m. dinner is $300 a person and $500 a couple. An eight-person sponsored table can be purchased for $10,000. Those sponsoring a table will receive an autographed Casey Hampton Steelers jersey and all guests of the table will attend a pre-event profanityfilterprofanityfilterprofanityfilterprofa nityfiltertail party at 7 p.m. with the featured guests.

The event is a black-tie event and invitation only. Those who are certain they will be able to attend can request an invitation at mvpsportslogistics(at)gmail.com.

Collins said the money raised will go toward Hurricane Ike relief.

“We haven’t set a specific dollar amount that we are trying to raise,” Collins said. “Whatever we raise, we will appreciate. Casey is just trying to do his part to get Galveston better than it was before.”

Can’t afford the dinner? Hampton’s island fans can still catch a glimpse of him March 28 when the city hosts a parade for him. The parade will conclude at Ball High, where the school plans to retire his jersey.

“This will be an exciting weekend,” Collins said.
