Steeler Report: Veteran receivers plenty; will the Steelers bite now that Washington is gone?

PITTSBURGH - As the free-agency period heads into its second week the biggest question right now for the Steelers, is what do they do about the No.3 receiver slot.

Nate Washington got a hefty pay raise when he signed with the Titans on Monday, more then the Steelers would have been able to tender him but his departure leaves a big void to fill.

The Steelers drafted Limas Sweed in the hopes he could develop into a Plaxico Burress type guy, one who eventually could move into Hines Ward's No. 2 slot. Instead, he was a huge disappointment last year.

Given Pittsburgh's history of developing second year players into top caliber talent, Sweed will be worth watching heading into OTA's and Training Camp.

For now though, how do you fill the void left by Washington without breaking the bank? While they are long shots to join the team, with the Steelers anything is possible. So here are a few that might be worth looking at as they turn to some veteran help via the market.

1) Devery Henderson- He is the second coming of Washington. Last year he had 32 receptions for 793 yards for the pass happy Saints, but he also dropped a number of balls. If it sounds familiar it is Washington II, but much faster. The Buccaneers are reported to be interested in him, and being so far under the cap would have money to make a huge deal. His tendency to drop passes have scared some teams, so he could be available at the right price.

2) Bobby Engram - Yes he came into the league in 1996, and last year suffered a broken shoulder in training camp that forced him to miss the first three games of the season. Still he had 47 receptions and 489 yards in 2008. Not the speed of Washington, but a veteran who could help while Sweed learns the ropes. He is also just two years removed from a 94 catch season. Engram has ties to the area, having played for Joe Paterno at Penn State.

3) Shaun McDonald - There has not been much talk about the 5-10 McDonald, who caught 79 passes in 2007. His average per catch last year was just under ten yards, but he could fill a need and be there for the taking at a nominal fee.

4) Marty Booker- Yep, another veteran in his 30's. Still he would be worth a gamble as he still has some speed left in the burners and averaged 15 yards per catch.

5) Ronald Curry- Who? Exactly. Which is why the 30 year old might not draw much interest and be there for the taking, at a nominal fee. He has three 700 yard seasons to his name, but last year only had 19 receptions in 13 games. Yet another veteran.

AFC NORTH NUGGETS

Yesterday the Examiner reported that interest in Steeler free-agent Bryant McFadden had been dwindling.

Here's yet another corner who just signed that could have an impact on what happens with the Steeler free-agent. Domonique Foxworth, who was rated much lower than McFadden, signed a lucrative deal with the Ravens.

Foxworth's deal with the Ravens is around $7million per season. DeAngelo Hall recently got six years for $54million with $22.5million guaranteed while Kelvin Hayden received five years for $43million with $22million guaranteed.

"What we have found out over the 13years of this organization is when we've had good corner play, we've won," general manager Ozzie Newsome said during a press conference on "Having that as a strength on your football team leads me to believe that we can be a successful team on the field next year."

McFadden was in Arizona on Monday, not Sunday as earlier reported by many sources including the Examiner. It remains to be seen as to how the market plays out with him. One source has said that McFadden not playing a full year has something to do with the lack of attention, but again the free-agency period has just begun.

TJ signs with Seahawks?

After talking with the Vikings for over five hours on Sunday, TJ Houshmandzadeh decided to sign with the Seahawks, thus ending his era with the Bengals.

Sources tell the Examiner that the Bengals had an offer on the table higher than the deal Hines Ward (five years, $33 million) signed, but a five-year, $40 million contract that included $15 million in guaranteed money was offered by Seattle according to John Clayton and Michael Smith of ESPN.com

Houshmandzadeh leads all NFL receivers with the most receptions (372) since 2005.

Browns fodder

Is new Browns coach Eric Mangini becoming the next Bill Belichick? Time will tell, but his trading of the oft outspoken Kellen Winslow for a second round pick has sent out signals that he is in charge and the country club that former coach Romeo Crenell ran is over.

Here's an interesting rumor to follow in the next few weeks, although the Examiner's sources in Cleveland have heard no rumblings of it in the works. It comes from a Broncos blog site and says Brady Quinn and Shaun Rogers will be traded for for Jay Cutler and the Broncos 3rd round draft pick.

Mangini wants to stockpile draft picks, but pulling a deal like this one? Highly unlikely. A better scenario has the Browns trading receiver Braylon Edwards, who has said in the past he is not happy in Cleveland.

Cornerback/return man Chris Carr, who will also be talking with the Steelers, is expected to visit the team this afternoon.

We need a speedster in my book. Hopefully Sweed will come into his own this comming year. I think he knows that he played like crap for a big part of the season and will be looking for redemption.

Is Demetrius Williams a UFA?? I was interested in him back in 06, but we drafted Willie Reid instead in the 3rd. I was pimping Furrey around the Super Bowl.......would like to see him signed as veteran insurance.

he WAS a RFA......the deadline to tender a RFA was feb 26....the ravens never offered him a tender, so now he's fair game...
