Default Bill to ban Barbie

CHARLESTON -- Barbie has been around for decades, but is it time for the blond to be banned?

It may sound silly, but it's a serious issue for one West Virginia delegate.

"I just hate the image that we give to our kids that if you're beautiful, you're beautiful and you don't have to be smart," said Del. Jeff Eldridge, (D) Lincoln County.

Delegate Jeff Eldridge introduced a bill to the house on Tuesday asking lawmakers to stop the sales of Barbie in the mountain state.

Delegate Eldridge isn't trying to target just Barbie but any doll that puts too much importance on physical beauty.

"I knew a lot of people were going to joke about it and poke fun at me. I couldn't get anybody to sign on the bill with me but I said I'm still going to introduce it," said Eldridge.

"I think that it's nice to have a male member of the House of Delegates worried about women's images and what they're supposed to do or they think they're supposed to do to succeed. My sense is that this is probably not a bill that's going to pass," said Del. Nancy Peoples Guthrie, (D) Kanawha County.

Amy Smith of Charleston says her three daughters haven't shown a lot of interest in Barbie yet but should that day come, she's not counting on the legislature to help her send the right message.

"I think that there are other ways to promote confidence and instill values in your daughters other than the toys that they play with," said Smith. "I don't have a problem with Barbie."

The Barbie Ban Bill has been sent to the House Judiciary Committee. Delegate Eldridge admits getting it passed may be a long-shot, but says he's prepared to stand behind his legislation.

This is the same type of nimrod that likes to give ALL the kiddies "participation tropies" in sports. I love anything positive for the kids but I don't believe this BS is the right approach.

How 'bout cha go bounce your head off a brick wall a few times to clear the cobb webs Jeffy, and then you can call it a day. Whataya say pal!

Ha wow...all I have to say about this is if a daughters personal image and confidence is being swayed by a Barbie doll and not her parents, there's serious issues in the household that banning a doll will not fix.

Dude must have got ahold of some bad Moonshine. I guess his next brainstorm will be to introduce legislation to ban the G.I. Joe doll because it will give young boys the impression that enlisting in the military is an honorable thing to do.

Way to go dolt - banning the most popular doll ever made which has made and still makes the Mattel Corporation millions of dollar is really going to help stimulate the economy.

The real reason he wants to ban Barbie is Ken isn't a blood relative.
