Default Comp Picks

Taking a look at the comp picks for this year. (announced at end or March)

I'm not aware of the rules for determining this and I believe that they are not public.

Teams get a pick up to 4 for their net loss of FA players. If a team breaks even on number of players but loses overall quality, they can get a 7th rounder. Up to 32 picks are awarded league-wide at the end of rounds 3-7.

Weighting is supposedly based on salary, playing time, and postseason awards.

Not all players are eligible but not sure on the rules. Players that have been cut/released/waived do not count. This includes Hartwig, Roye,Bryant, Ernster, Leftwich and McHugh.

Steelers lost :

Faneca -- 2nd highest FA contract -- Starter..
Haggans --Contract?? - Active for 11 games -- started none
St. Pierre -- Vet minimum likely -- never active on gameday.
Kreider -- Active 11 games, started 4.
Tuman -- active 3 games, started 2. probably vet min.

Steelers picked up:

Keyaron Fox - Actrive but little playing time - Vet minimum
Mewelde Moore - Active with decent playing time 2M /yer contract
Berger -- I didn't see mention of him in any of the articles about this but not sure why he wouldn't count since he was a UFA from the cardinals.

So by my accounting we lost 5 and picked up 3. We should get 2 picks.

I think based on losing Faneca, we're in line for a 3rd rounder.

Faneca aside, based on the comparatively high quality and salary of our FA signings, I'd say we're looking at maybe a low 7th for the other comp pick. Maybe even Mr. Irrelevant!

Here are the projected picks for 2009, along with the compensatory player, their average contract value, their games played, their games started and other notes (I’ve also noted the nine picks that fall near a cutoff point and could end up in a different round) –

N.Y. Giants (Gibril Wilson, $6.5008 million, 16/15) – possibly a third-round pick
San Diego (Michael Turner, $5.75 million, 16/16, Pro Bowl) – possibly a third-round pick

SIXTH ROUND

New England (Randall Gay, $3.3125 million, 14/13)

SEVENTH ROUND
Tennessee (Ben Hartsock, $2.25 million, 11/11)
Washington (Mark Brunell, $1.755 million, 2/0)
Seattle (Chuck Darby, $1.467 million, 15/15)
Chicago (John Gilmore, $1.333 million, 16/10)
Seattle (Kevin Bentley, $1.3 million, 16/7)
Seattle (Ellis Wyms, $1.4 million, 16/0)
Chicago (Brendon Ayanbadejo, $1.223 million, 16/0, Pro Bowl)
Seattle (D.J. Hackett, $1.2 million, 9/2)
Jacksonville (Terry Cousin, $1.115 million, 16/0)
Detroit (net-value comp pick, lost three for $10.721 million, 38/22; signed three for $7.134 million, 42/31)
Detroit (non-compensatory pick)
Kansas City (non-compensatory pick)
St. Louis (non-compensatory pick)

From the AdamJT13 guy that's usually right on every year. He's the only one I listen to.

For the eighth consecutive year and ninth overall, I’ve attempted to project all of the compensatory draft picks that the NFL will award. In my past seven projections, I’ve averaged 23.9 out of 32 exactly correct (going to the correct team in the correct round) and have been off by only one round on an average of 4.1 more. Last year, I got 25 correct and was off by one round on four more.

He's been predicting them right every year.

I'd say he's lot better than anyone here.

Awesome post killer.

I was making my guesses without a lot of these details he's determined over the years.

I think Tuman did not count becasue he was cut fairly early in the season.
