Steelers, Passion raise money for Mt. Pleasant teams

More than 800 visitors packed the Mt. Pleasant Area Junior High School gym to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers play members of the school faculty and team coaches.

Organized by Rick Albright, the event was a fundraiser for the Mt. Pleasant Junior Football league and the Mt. Pleasant Vikings girls basketball teams.

Prior to the game, members of the Pittsburgh Passion women's football team played the Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team, beating the Vikings girls, 47-44.

"We are thrilled to have two national championship teams here tonight," Albright said of the Super Bowl-winning Steelers and the 2007 championship-winning Passion. "We are always happy to have the Steelers, and this is the first time that the Pittsburgh Passion came here and we are honored."

The Steelers took a 15-minute break at halftime to sign autographs and meet with fans.

"This is always a lot of fun," said former Steelers wide receiver Louis Lipps. Lipps said the team plays about 65 games every offseason. "We have a lot of fun and we raise money for the schools. We're happy to do it."

The Mt. Pleasant team was led by Mt. Pleasant High School principal Ken Williams.

"We've been practicing a bit," Williams said. "Making some shots and getting some plays together. But it's all about having fun and showing support for our teams."

The event featured 50/50 drawings and raffles for signed footballs from each team.

"All of the proceeds from the evening will go to both groups," Albright said. "We're just happy to see such great support from the community."

Jay Thomas of Mt. Pleasant brought his family.

"These guys are great," Thomas said. "James Harrison held my daughter for a photograph and smiled like he was really having a good time. I wonder if they have any idea how something like that can make a difference to a kid. She'll always remember this."

Seven Steelers showed up to play against the 23 members of the faculty.

The Steelers won, 117-28, behind leading scorer/quarterback Charlie Batch.

"They usually do win when they come to these," said team escort Tom O'Malley. "But hey have a lot of fun and it's good fun for a good cause. They don't practice, but then we really never know who is going to come. We just wait to see who shows up."

Steelers who played in addition to Lipps, Batch and Harrison were Tony Hill, Marin Mantz, Ryan Mundy and Rashard Mendenhall.

Mt. Pleasant players, in addition to Albright and Williams, included Dave King, Jason Mellors, Mark Troxell, Steven Evans, Jim Beranek, Brian Ruff, Mark Sarnelli, Ron Duricko, John Yester, Barry Palanko, Vince Ostrosky, Greg Guzy, Gary Alred, Danny Wensel, Brad Harkcom, Aaron Zarhactka, Vic Snyder, John Campbell, Tom Warburton, Kenny Philabaum, and Brian Evans.

My mom, sister & her 2 boys went to this event last night. My sister just sent me pics on my phone of Harrison & Batch. Pretty cool.

When I get home tonight, I'll try and post them.

Do other NFL teams do these charity basketball games, or is this unique to the Steelers? I've been in the DC area for 6 years, and I don't recall ever hearing about the Redskins or Ratbirds playing in a game like this.

I know I've seen where other teams do stuff like this...I just can't find the links to prove it. I know that Cleveland sports teams do a lot of charity events each year...whether it's new playgrounds or new homes.

Sounds like Charlie and Rashard's shoulders are doing ok.
