Steeler report: Team looks for depth, re-signs two

PITTSBURGH - The Steelers continue to make moves when it comes to free-agency, and now the only thing that appears missing from the equation is a wide receiver to replace Nate Washington.

Then again, the team re-signed Martin Nance two weeks ago to compete with Limas Sweed for the No. 3 slot. Nance will make $310,000.00 in 2009 and $395,000.00 in 2010, which is a bargain by NFL standards.

With Bryant McFadden's departure, the team's depth at cornerback was something that needed addressed. The team tried to woo free-agent Chris Carr to town last week, but Carr reportedly turned down a $3.4 million, two-year deal to sign with the Ravens.

In keeping with what has become common this off-season, the team re-signed one of its own to help bolster that corp, as Fernando Bryant got a one-year contract. Bryant was drafted in the first round (26th overall) in the 1999 NFL Draft by the Jaguars and spent five years there, before signing with the Lions in 2004.

He only played in two games last year for the Steelers, and has not suited up for a game since Nov. 20. Two years ago, Bryant recorded 76 tackles with the Lions and had 14 passes defensed.

The other move by the Steelers on March 17, was to re-sign tackle Trai Essex, meaning the team has retained its four free-agent lineman. Essex visited with the Titans.

Essex will receive a signing bonus of $500,000 and a contract worth nearly $2 million. He is a five year veteran and can play both guard and tackle.
